Kutztown Comeback Falls Short Against Millersville

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Kutztown nearly erased a late four goal deficit, but Millersville held on for an 11-9 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's lacrosse.

The Golden Bears trailed 10-6 with 8:28 to play after a goal by the Marauders' Brooke Fisher. KU scored twice in the next 1:25 to cut the lead in half, however. Jillian Spencer (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) scored with 7:41 to go, followed by a tally by Krystine Beodeker (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) 38 seconds later to make it 10-8.

Spencer found the back of the net with 2:58 remaining to make it a one-goal game. But Ashley Henderson scored for Millersville with 1:48 left to ice the win for the Marauders.

KU fell behind 5-1 early in the game, but closed the half with a three-goal run, including two scores in the final 46 seconds. Emily Solt (Bowmanstown, Pa./Concord (Del.)) scored with 5:57 to play to make it 5-2, before the Golden Bears benefitted from a pair of yellow cards by the Marauders. Lauren Schlitt (Baldwin, N.Y./Oceanside) scored with an advantage with 46 seconds left in the half and Megan Schwar (Alpha, N.J./Phillipsburg) cut it to 5-4 with just nine seconds left on the clock on a free position shot.

Solt led Kutztown with three goals in the contest. Spencer and Schwar added two each. Schwar also led the team with four draw controls and scooped four ground balls.

Marisa Kalodner (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) had strong game defensively with five caused turnovers and six ground balls.

JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape) got the nod in goal for KU and stopped five shots before giving way to Alexis Williams (Woolwich Township, N.J./Kingsway). Williams made a pair of saves in 43 minutes.

The game was part of the Lax 4 Life program to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

Caitlin Shannon tallied three goals for Millersville. Fisher had two goals and two assists, while Ashley Henderson and Kathryn Kehring had two goals and an assist each.

Claire Moyer had four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Lauren Mateja made seven saves for Millersville.

Kutztown travels to Edinboro on April 7 for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
