Castleton Cruises Past Thomas in NAC East Opener

Waterville, Maine-Thomas dropped a tough 22-4 game to the Spartans of Castleton State in a NAC East Division game Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. Castleton's Amanda Flodstrom had game high five goals and five assists on the afternoon. First-year Jennifer Day scored a team high two goals and picked up 11 ground balls for the Terriers in the loss.

The Spartans came out strong scoring three unassisted goals in the first five minutes of the game off the stick of Kate Auer, Blake Wardwell and Flodstrom. The Terriers would answer when Day scored a goal at the 25:08 mark of the first half.

Castleton would not give in as they would go on to score three more unanswered goals from Mariah Lesure, Samantha Bonasera, and Taryn Smith. The Terriers would once again answer with the second and final goal of the half for the Terriers from Jillian Lambert. Castleton would then go on to score eight more goals to finish off the half. At the break the Spartans held a 14-2 lead over the Terriers.

The second half saw Castleton control the ball and outscored the Terriers 8-2. Auer, Lesure, Smith, Cori Healy, Madison DaCosta, and Flodstrom all had goals for the Spartans, while Day and Brianna Yates had the lone two goals for Thomas in the half. The Spartans saw 10 different girls score for the game and tallied a total of 38 shots.

Kelsey MacDonald got the win in goal for the Spartans making 5 saves on 12 shots while Teshia Cates shoulders the loss for the Terriers making 9 saves.

Next up for the Terriers is a conference match-up tomorrow afternoon against Colby-Sawyer College at 11:00 a.m.

WATERVILLE, Maine Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) scored five goals and dished out five assists as Castleton State cruised to a 22-4 win over Thomas in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division action Friday afternoon.

The Spartans scored early and often en route to a 14-2 halftime lead and improved to 3-5, 1-0. Thomas evens its overall mark at 3-3, while falling to 0-1 in conference play.

Mariah Lesure (Vernon, Vt.) followed with three goals while Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.), Taryn Smith (Southbury, Conn.), Cori Healy (Jefferson Township, N.J.), Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.), Madison DaCosta (New Bedford, Mass.) and Kate Auer (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) each registered a pair.

The Terriers cut the Spartan lead to 6-2 after a Jillian Lambert at the 14:17 mark, but Castleton ended the half on an 8-0 run to put the game away. Flodstrom had a hand in half the output, scoring once and assisting on three others.

Freshman goalie Kelsey McDonald (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) made five saves to earn her first win, while senior Angelica Mazzola (Harborfields, N.Y.) controlled the possession game with a game-high nine ground balls and eight draw controls.

Teshia Cates stopped nine shots in the loss and Jennifer Day led the Terriers with a pair of goals.

Castleton will take on University of Maine at Farmington tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
