Crusaders Trip up Presidents with Strong 2nd Half

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Susquehanna broke a 6-6 halftime tie with the first 10 goals of the second half and the Crusaders ran away with a 16-10 Landmark Conference victory over Washington & Jefferson on Friday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The Crusaders (6-6, 2-2 Landmark) had nine different players score goals, including a three-goal, four-assist effort from Dustin Breakey.

During the loss, W&J junior goalie Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) became the Presidents' all-time saves leader after compiling 19 stops. He now has 429 saves in three seasons with the Presidents.

The first half featured four ties and two lead changes. W&J went ahead 6-4 after junior midfielder Sean Hipley's (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) goal at the 3:54 mark of the second quarter. However, SU fought back to force the halftime tie after Austen Lein and Marcus Cheatham scored 12 seconds apart.

Susquehanna blanked the Presidents 6-0 during the third quarter after attempting 15 of the 20 shots during the period. The Crusaders added the first four goals of the fourth quarter to build a 16-6 advantage.

W&J broke a 32-plus minute scoring drought when senior attacker Mark Ringeling (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) scored with 2:16 left. He added another goal, his third of the match, 28 seconds later.

Lein and Luke Delavan both finished with three goals and one assist for the Crusaders, who outshot W&J 48-27. Susquehanna also dominated the faceoffs, winning 22 of 28.

Freshman attacker Zach Wootton (Westminster, Md./Glenelg Country School) and junior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho, Bishop Kelly) both collected two goals for the Presidents. Senior attacker Andrew Wallick (Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) notched one goal and one assist, while sophomore midfielder Casey Smallwood (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) netted the Presidents' other tally.

The Presidents (2-9, 0-4 Landmark) return to Alexandre Stadium Wednesday for a non-conference match with Saint Vincent (4:00 pm).

WASHINGTON, Pa. A strong second half helped propel to Susquehanna to a 16-10 win at first-year Landmark Conference opponent Washington & Jefferson on Friday afternoon.

An evenly matched first half was followed by a second half in which SU (6-6, 2-2) held W&J (2-9, 0-3) to only four goals, all of which came in the final two-plus minutes of the game.

Despite the late scoring from the Presidents, the SU offense had already provided enough scoring to secure the win. Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) all picked up hat tricks in the victory. Breakey also chipped in a game-high four assists for a seven-point performance. Delavan and Lein each recorded an assist.

Goalie Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) played all but the final minute of the game, making eight saves in the process. Anthony Maiorella (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) played the final 60 seconds.

The Crusaders had 48 shots to W&J's 27 and Trae Humphreys (Wilmington, Del./Sanford) dominated on face-offs, winning 16 of 19 on the afternoon.

To open the game, W&J out-scored SU 4-2 in the first quarter. Less than two minutes into the game, the Presidents got on the board before Delavan was able to knot the game at one with a goal at the 6:35 mark.

Just one minute later, Tylere Fritts (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) handed the Crusaders their first lead of the game but W&J ended the quarter with three unanswered goals to take the 4-2 edge.
