Castleton Crushes Thomas, Remains Perfect in NAC

Waterville, Maine - Thomas fell, 23-2, to Castleton State in a NAC game Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. Castleton's Alex Green had a game-high six goals and three assists on the afternoon.

Sean Machin was the Terriers top performer scoring one of the team's total two goals. With the loss the Terriers drop their third game in a row, while the visiting Spartans pick up their fourth win of the season and improve to 3-0 in NAC play.

The Spartans (4-6, 3-0 NAC) came out strong scoring three unassisted goals in the first five minutes of the game off the stick of Aj Groot, Cam Ormiston, and Green. The Terriers (1-7, 0-2 NAC) would answer when midfielder Gunnar Shelton scored a man-up goal to pull them within two. The Spartans seemed un-phased as they would then go on to score five more goals to end the quarter with a score of 8-1.

In the second quarter, the Spartans continued to score as they put six more goals past Terrier goalkeeper Jesse Morkeski. At the break the Spartans held a 14-1 lead over the Terriers.

The Spartans continued their scoring frenzy in the third quarter as the Terriers defense allowed seven more goals. Green scored three of his game high six goals in this quarter while Zach Davidson, Nohea King, Alex Brands, and Jake Krantz scored one goal each. The Terrier's offense continued to remain quiet in the quarter recording 5 shots.

Thomas would finally get back on the board at the beginning of the fourth when Machin scored unassisted to give the team its second and final goal of the game. Spartans would go on to score two more times past the stick of Morkeski and finish the game with a 23-2 victory.

Eric Horsfield got the win in goal for the Spartans making seven saves on nine shots while Morkeski shoulders the loss for the Terriers making 15 saves on 38 shots.

Next up for the Terriers is a conference match-up tomorrow afternoon against Green Mountain College at 1:15 p.m.

WATERVILLE, Maine Alex Green (Braintree, Vt.) registered a game-high nine points on six goals and three assists as Castleton State breezed to a 23-2 win over Thomas in NAC action Friday afternoon.

Green led 11 different Spartans who registered at least one point, including A.J. Groot (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Nohea King (St. Albans, Vt.) and Colin Murray (Oshawa, Ont.) who each netted three goals. Freshman Zach Davidson (South Burlington, Vt.) facilitated the high-scoring offense with six assists to go along with a pair of goals. Davidson has now registered multiple points in ten-straight games to open his career.

Gunner Shelton and Sean Machin each scored for the Terriers who fell to 1-7, 0-2.

Castleton has now won 22-straight NAC contests dating back to the 2010 season, and improves to 4-6, 3-0.

The Spartans led 8-1 after the first period, and rattled off 13-straight goals before Machin opened the scoring in the fourth period.

Brad Barber (Napean, Ont.) finished 23 for 28 in the faceoff circle and grabbed a game-high 12 ground balls to control the Spartan possession game.

For the game, Castleton outshot its host 52-19 while holding a 48-20 edge in ground balls, while converting an impressive 23 of 24 clear attempts.

Eric Horsfield (Tolland, Conn.) picked up the win, stopping seven shots, while Jesse Morkeski made 15 saves in the loss.

Castleton will take on the University of Maine at Farmington tomorrow at 12:30.
