RIT Uses 6-0 Second-Half Run to Down Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 6, 2012) Despite a career-high seven goals from freshman attack Dara Davis, Vassar surrendered six straight goals in a 12-minute span of the second half to visiting RIT and suffered a tough 16-11 loss in Liberty League play on Friday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

In the first meeting between the two teams since 2005, when Vassar defeated RIT 18-10 for the New York State Championship, the Brewers had nine more shots than the Tigers in the second half (20-11), but were outscored 8-4. RIT's junior midfielder Shelby Vakiener and senior midfielder Rebecca Lampson each had three second half goals to pace the Tigers.

Vassar drops to 3-5, 0-3 on the season. RIT improves to 3-4, 2-1. The Brewers will host the University of Rochester in league play tomorrow at 2:00 pm, while RIT travels to Bard for a 2:00 p.m. contest.

With Davis scoring three of Vassar's first four goals on a nifty array of shooting, the Brewers broke out to a 4-1 lead, but the Tigers fought back to tie the contest 4-4 on a goal by Lampson at the 13:50 mark. The contest would see-saw back and forth for the remainder of the half, tied at 5-5 and 6-6. A goal by Davis with 10 seconds remaining, cut the RIT lead to 8-7 at intermission.

A goal by Vakiener at the 23:12 mark of the second half knotted the game at 9-9, but initiated a string of six straight RIT goals that catapulted the Tigers into a 14-9 lead with 8:47 to play. In that stretch, Lampson had two more goals and added her third tally late in the half for her sixth of the game and 27th on the season.

In that mix of goals were two more by Davis, her 20th of the season, but RIT had established enough a lead to withstand those late tallies.

Freshman Katherine Pula faced 24 shots and made six saves. RIT junior goalie Katelyn Crane made 13 saves against 34 Vassar shots.

Vassar held a 19-13 lead in ground balls.
