Colgate Falls to Navy in Defensive Struggle

HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/7/12) Colgate held Navy to seven goals under its season average, but the Raiders were not able to come back from a four-goal deficit in the second half as Colgate dropped a 8-6 decision in league play at Tyler's Field.

Colgate (3-9, 2-2 PL) got two goals from Katie Sullivan and the Raiders had four other goal scorers. The teams combined to have 12 different scorers. Courtney Miller extended her goal-scoring streak to 23 games with a goal in the first half. Jennie Berglin got the start in net and made eight saves with five coming in the first half.

Navy (13-2, 4-0 PL) clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament with the win today as Kathy Young led the way with a pair of goals. Jasmine DePompeo had two points with a goal and an assist and now has 65 points this season. Michelle Verbeeck earned the start in front of the cage and got her third win of the year with seven stops.

The Midshipmen jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with unassisted goals from Aimee Gennaro and Young in the first 3:38 of the opening half. Miller answered with 24:15 left with an unassisted score for her 35th of the season. The Mids then increased their lead to 4-1 with Jill Coughlin and Jess Fellows scoring back-to-back goals in a short period of time. Colgate fired back with Katie Sullivan and Alison Flood narrowing the lead to 4-3, while Quincey Spagnoletti added an assist on the Sullivan goal. Navy got its two-goal lead back at 5-3 to close out the first 30 minutes with Emily Mellin scoring with 5:55 remaining in the half.

The final 30 minutes started out fast with three goals in the first four minutes. Navy got out to its largest lead of the game at 7-3 with Young and DePompeo adding to their point totals with a goal apiece. Monica White was able to stop the brief run with her eighth of the year with an assist to rookie Megan Ark. The teams did not score for the next 12 minutes, until the Mids boosted their lead back to four with Loren Generi scoring her lone goal of the day and her second point with 14:11 left in the game to give Navy a 8-4 lead.

Amanda O'Sullivan brought the Raiders to within three with 11:39 remaining with her 22nd goal of the season to cut the lead to 8-5. From there, the Mids controlled most of the play as they began to stall in the final minutes. Sullivan, however was able to find the net with 2:19 remaining with a free-position shot that Verbeeck looked to have handled, but the ball trickled across the line for the goal to slice the lead down to two at 8-6. The Mids then won the draw and burnt out the final two minutes with a stall to earn the win and remain undefeated in league action.

The Midshipmen had a 19-14 shot advantage, but Colgate led in the ground ball department with 16 to Navy's 14. The Raiders held the Mids scoreless on free-position shots and each team took care of the ball well with 23 combined turnovers and only three failed clears.

Colgate will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. as the Raiders Welcome Canisius to campus.

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Navy secured a fifth straight Patriot League Tournament berth with an 8-6 road win against Colgate (3-9, 2-2 PL) on Saturday at Tyler's Field. Navy is now 13-2 overall and 4-0 in Patriot League play.

The Mids have won 13 of their last 14 games and a win against American next Friday would clinch the league's regular season title and hosting responsibilities for the four-team postseason tournament (April 27-29). Navy has qualified for the league tournament in each of its first five years as a varsity program and won the tournament title in each of the past two seasons.
