Shepherd Outguns Wheeling Jesuit
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore attack Christina Ferrara (California, MD/Leonardtown) scored four goals and added two assists while sophomore attack Hanna Wharton (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana) netted four goals to lead Shepherd to a 23-7 win over Wheeling Jesuit in action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Junior midfielder Nicole Ruane (Sykesville, MD/Century) scored three goals and added two assists, while freshman attack Georgia Karr Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) had two goals and a pair of assists. Junior midfielder Krista Tippett (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown) contributed two goals and an assist.
Freshman attack Hayley Roper (California, MD/Leonardtown)sophomore defender Jenna Benke (Baltimore, MD/Mercy), and junior attack/midfielder Alexandra Coates (Jefferson, MD/Brunswick) each had a goal and an assist.
Junior attack Maddie Sullivan (Abingdon, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), sophomore midfielder Jenny Cavey (Sykesville, MD/Westminster), freshman defender Maddie O'Leary (Salisbury, MD/James M. Bennett), freshman defender/midfielder Alyx Albano (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills), and freshman midfielder Natasha Schill (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) each added single tallies as 13 players scored for the Rams.
Haley Rush had a pair of goals to lead Wheeling Jesuit.
Shepherd opened the game on a 7-0 run and had an 18-3 advantage at halftime.
Freshman netminder Lily Schmulowitz (Baltimore, MD/Catonsville) recorded five saves for the Rams, while Sara Buckley had six saves for the Cardinals.
Shepherd had a 37-22 advantage in shots with a 22-18 edge in ground balls. The Rams held a 22-10 advantage in draw controls.
Shepherd improves to 10-3 on the season, while Wheeling Jesuit falls to 2-9. The Rams return to action on April 15 when they host Slippery Rock for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
Notes: Nicole Ruane set a new Shepherd season record for draw controls with 58, breaking the old mark of 56 set by Ruane in 2011. Ruane (55 goals) need just two more goals to set a new Shepherd season mark for goals. Shannon Carta scored a record 56 goals for the Rams in 2011.
