No. 6 Adelphi Staves off No. 11 Saint Michael's

Senior Joe Vitale (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and junior Joe Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmington) each scored one goal and added one assist for the Panthers, while sophomore Greg Puskuldjian (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) found the back of the net once, scooped up 12 ground balls and went 14 for 17 on face-offs. Five other players had one goal for the hosts and senior Eric Janssen (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) stopped 16 shots.

The two squads battled through a scoreless first quarter and the Purple Knights were narrowly outshot 10-8. Adelphi took a 2-0 lead by the 12:59 mark of the second quarter, before the Purple Knights tallied three-straight goals with Donnally netting the first goal at 7:12. Glackin and Vanzo each found the back of the net in a 1:40 stretch with Vanzo scoring at 2:16 to give Saint Michael's a 3-2 lead heading into the second half.

The Panthers scored six seconds into the third quarter, before tacking on two more goals at 13:31 and 7:19. Donally countered 18 seconds later and cut the lead to just one goal, but Adelphi scored two goals in 12 seconds to take a three-goal lead with 5:07 left in the quarter.

Donnally completed the hat trick bid 26 seconds into the fourth quarter and scored 1:52 later to once again trim the Purple Knights' deficit to one-goal with 12:42 remaining in the contest. Saint Michael's outshot Adelphi 15-8 during the final quarter, but the Panthers fended off the Purple Knights rally and netted an insurance marker at 3:38.

The Purple Knights host Franklin Pierce University next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
