Denver Downs Stanford for MPSF Win on Senior Day

DENVER Denver sophomore Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.) scored twice and had two assists and junior Mikayla Clark (Eden Prairie, Minn.) added a hat trick to lead the Pioneers in a 12-9 win over Stanford on Senior Day at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

"This was a very exciting win for us. Stanford has been one of our top conference opponents for seven years running, so it was a great win," head coach Liza Kelly said. "The girls really made an effort to play hard for our seniors, and I think they did that."

Redshirt-junior Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.), sophomore Meredith Harris (Middleburg, Va.), senior Melissa Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and freshman Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) added two points each for the Pioneers (9-1, 3-0 MPSF), who have won nine-straight. The nation's leader in caused turnovers, junior Kate Henrich (Lansdale, Pa.) caused six turnovers, snagged five ground balls and grabbed four draw controls to lead Denver's defense.

Denver outshot Stanford 33-20, grabbed 21 ground balls to the Cardinal's 14, and caused 21 of Stanford's 25 turnovers.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but Stanford (3-8, 1-1 MPSF) answered with three goals. Denver netted two more goals to Stanford's one before halftime to led 8-4 at the break.

Denver and Stanford traded goals throughout the second half, but DU's lead was never less than three.

Prior to the game, Denver honored seniors Maier, Becca Steinberg (Millersville, Md.), Laura Connors (Manhasset, N.Y.) and Ashley Harman (Boyertown, Pa.).

The Pioneers conclude their home schedule against San Diego State at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Monday at 2:00 p.m. MT.
