Wesley Loses Early Lead, Falls at Marymount
ARLINGTON, VA. – Wesley claimed an early lead but could not hang, on as Marymount (Va.) defeated the Wolverines, 9-7, on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference play. The loss drops Wesley to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in the CAC.
Scott Brozey (2g) and Dan Tryon gave the Wolverines an early 2-0 lead with goals in the opening minutes of the first quarter. A Saints goal with 4:13 remaining in the opening period cut the deficit in half going into the second.
Opening the second quarter, Wesley scored three-straight with goals by Patrick Lipari (1g, 1a), Brozey and Joe Donato (2g) to take its largest lead at 5-1 with 10:02 left in the first half.
Marymount's Danny Carson and Connor Kellogg answered with scores 63 seconds apart before a goal by Donato with 1:30 left in the half gave the Navy & White a 6-3 halftime lead.
The Saints (5-7, 2-4 CAC) came out firing in the second half and outscored Wesley, 5-1 in the third, and took a 8-7 lead on a man-up goal by Kellogg at the 1:58 mark. It was Kellogg's game-high fourth goal of the day. Carson (2g, 1a) added a goal for the Saints in the fourth as Wesley was held scoreless in the final period.
Matt Ryan matched a career-high with 14 saves on the day and Michael McQuarrie picked a game-high nine ground balls after winning 10-17 faceoffs. Ryan Morris and Ken McDonald caused a team-high two turnovers apiece.
The Wolverines return to action on Wednesday, April 11, when they travel down Route 13 for a CAC match-up with No. 1 Salisbury University. The opening faceoff is set for 7:00 pm.
