Mazzola Scores 100th Goal as Castleton Wins at UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine - Senior Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) became just the seventh player in program history to school 100 career on Saturday afternoon as the Spartans earned a 19-6 win over the University of Maine at Farmington at Prescott Field.

Mazzola came into the game with 97 tallies and wasted little time in getting her 100th, scoring three times in the game's first eight minutes. She finished the contest with four goals and one assist as Castleton improved to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Beavers, meanwhile, fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The Spartans came out gunning, with two goals from Mazzola and one from Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) in the first 2:50 of action. Farmington countered win one but Castleton countered with two more, including Mazzola's third score with 22:05 remaining in the first half.

The Beavers scored three minutes late to cut the lead to 5-2, but Castleton scored seven unanswered goals to finish off the half. Flodstrom had three and Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) scored two as the Spartans held 12-2 lead at the break.

Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) scored the first goal of the second half to make it a 13-2 game with 26:26 left, but UMF scored four of six over the next 16 minutes to cut the Castleton lead to 15-6. The Spartans finished with the final four goals of the game on their way to the 12-goal victory.

Kate Auer (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) finished with a team-high five goals and one assist while Flodstrom had four scores and one helper. Taplin added an assist to go with her two goals, for three total points. Freshman Kelsey McDonald (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and junior Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) each played a half, allowing three goals.

Castleton is back in action on Wednesday when the team hosts Green Mountain at 4:00 p.m.
