Hughes' 8 Goals Lead 'Wick to Victory over Elmira

ONEONTA, NY- Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) scored a season-high eight goals as seven different players scored for Hawks, who defeated Elmira 18-13 at Wright Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Hartwick evens their record at 5-5 overall and is 1-2 in the Empire 8. Elmira falls to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8.

Hughes' eight goals are tied for second most in a Division III game this season.

Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) had three goals and assists. Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) scored two goals and assisted on five others. Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Loudonville) had two goals and one assist. Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) scored once and had two helpers. Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) and Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) both chipped in with one goal each.

Rick Acorn and Christian Archambault both scored four times to lead the Soaring Eagles. Jackson Correia had two goals. David Evert, Brady Richards and Dustin Gatt all scored once. Evert had five helpers on the day.

Hartwick scored first on a man-up goal by Vaglica and led 1-0 in the first quarter. Gatt scored the equalizer to tie the game up but Hartwick would score three straight times to go ahead 4-1 with 6:08 remaining in the first. The lead quickly disappeared as the Soaring Eagles would storm back and score four straight times to take a 5-4 lead with eight seconds left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, two goals by Ciolino and a man-up goal by Hughes gave Hartwick back the lead, 7-5, with 11:18 left on the clock. Two Elmira goals would tie the game up at 7-all at 7:09. The Hawks would again regain the lead on goals by Shields, Schaefer, and Hughes and were up 10-7 at halftime.

Hartwick picked up right where they left off in the third quarter with Hughes and Shields scoring to give the Hawks a 12-7 lead. After two straight Elmira scores made it a 12-9 game, both teams exchanged goals back and forth with Hartwick leading 14-11 heading into the final quarter of play.

After both teams again exchanged goals in the fourth quarter, 'Wick scored three more times to lead 18-12 and put the game out of reach. Acorn would complete the scoring in the game with 2:17 remaining on the clock and the Hawks would walk away with the victory.

Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) started in goal for Hartwick and he did not record a save in the first quarter. He was replaced by Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway) who played the rest of the game and made six saves.

Dave Bucchino started between the pipes for Elmira and recorded two saves in 2:39 of playing time. Mike Knowlton came in to relieve him and played the rest of the game and stopped 10 shots.

Hartwick led by a wide margin in shots, 53-32. The Hawks had a slight edge in groundballs, 42-41. 'Wick was effective on their extra-man opportunities as they converted 5 of 12 while Elmira was only 1 of 7. The Soaring Eagles were flagged for 12 penalties totaling 10:30 while the Hawks had only seven penalties for 5:30.

The Hawks will next play Wells College on the road in non-conference action on Wednesday. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
