Nor'easters Use 12-2 Run to Storm Back and Down Bison

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England tallied a dozen goals in the final 31 mintes to rally from a four-goal first-half deficit to defeat Nichols, 15-9, in a Commonwealth Coast match played Saturday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

Big Blue improves to 9-2 (3-0 CCC) with its seventh consecutive victory, matching the program's longest win streak which was set back in the 2000 season. The Nor'easters are also now 12-1 all-time against the Bison (3-6, 0-4 CCC).

Sophomore Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) led UNE with four markers, and first-year Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) added three goals and three assists. Seniors Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) and Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, N.H.), as well as junior Emily Lodge (Lyman, Maine), each chipped in with a pair of scores.

For the Bison, first-year Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) notched four goals, and senior Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) had two.

Facing the wrong side of a 7-3 game inside the last minute of the opening period, UNE first-year Rachel Schwaner (Holderness, N.H.) and Barton scored with 0:50 and 0:07 left in the half to split the margin heading into the break.

The Nor'easters posted the first three goals over a 10-minute stretch to begin the second stanza to grab their first lead of the day (8-7). Lodge and then two from Tavella brought UNE in front.

Nichols pulled even on a score by Murphy, and after Dvorak moved Big Blue back on top, Bison senior Emily Yourie (Ellington, Conn.) made it 9-9 with 15:10 to go.

UNE took the final lead of the afternoon at the 11:39 mark, courtesy of Tavella, and the hosts would find the back of the cage on five more shots the rest of the way to settle on the six-goal decision.

Sophomore goalie Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made five stops for the Nor'easters, who host Gordon College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).

The Bison received 11 saves from senior Danielle Mott (Cranston, R.I.). Nichols is back in action Monday with a non-conference home match against Daniel Webster College (4:00 p.m.).
