Holy Cross Falls to Lafayette to Stay Winless in PL

WORCESTER, Mass. Leading 4-3 at the half, the Leopards outscored the Crusaders by a 4-1 margin in the second, as Holy Cross fell to Lafayette, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action at Holy Cross Field on Senior Day. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-7 overall (0-5 PL), while the Leopards improve to 3-8 overall (1-3 PL).

Junior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.), junior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.), sophomore John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.) and senior Ricky DeCicco (Manhasset, N.Y.) each scored a goal for the Crusaders. Senior captain A.J. Guarente (Gaithersburg, Md.) won nine of 15 face-offs. Daugherty led the team with five ground balls, while junior Matt Ward (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Crusaders with two caused turnovers.

The Leopards were led by Brian Bock who posted two goals and two assists for four points, while Cory Scheuerle scored two goals. Mac Ahsler and Brendan Gover each picked up six ground balls, while Gover caused four turnovers.

After the Leopards took a 2-0 lead, Kennedy made it a 2-1 contest with 7:25 left in the first quarter. Lafayette then netted two straight goals to increase its lead to 4-1 with 13:59 remaining in the second quarter. The Crusaders then cut the Lafayette lead to 4-3 with two straight goals to close out the half. With 3:10 left, Daugherty found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Kyle Kadlick (West Roxbury, Mass.) and then just nine seconds later, Hannan scored as Lafayette took a 4-3 lead to the half.

The Leopards netted the first three goals of the second half to increase their lead to 7-3 with 8:07 remaining in the fourth quarter. DeCicco found the back of the net with 3:34 left to make it a 7-4 game. Scheuerle netted the last goal of the game off a pass by Colin Serling for the 8-4 final.

Sophomore goalie Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) made nine saves for the Crusaders, while Jake Hyatt posted 10 saves for a .714 save percentage. Lafayette outshot Holy Cross, 33-25, while the Leopards picked up 29 ground balls and the Crusaders tallied 27. The Crusaders won nine of 16 face-offs. The Crusaders went 0-2 on extra-man opportunities and Lafayette went 1-4.

The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, April 10, when they play No. 19 Bryant at 7:00 p.m. for the season-finale at Holy Cross Field.

The Crusaders' 10 seniors, Matt Boylan (Kings Park, N.Y.), DeCicco, Brent Ferraro (Islip, N.Y.), Guarente, David Henry (Davidsonville, Md.), Tom Hines (Manchester, Mass.), Colin McGeehin (Newtown Square, Pa.), Andrew Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.), Greg Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) and Nick Rabiecki (Maplewood, N.J.) were honored before the game.

Boylan has played in 29 career games with 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points. He also has 18 ground balls. DeCicco has played in 21 career games with three goals and four ground balls. As a junior he was a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

Ferraro has played in 41 contests with two goals and two assists for four points. He also has 28 ground balls. Hines has been a leader on the team as he is a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy.

McGeehin has played in all 56 games during his career with 50 goals and 24 assists for 74 points. He has netted three career game-winning goals. He also has 41 ground balls. As a freshman he was named the New England Co-Player of the Week, while he earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week accolades twice. He is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

Morici has played in 53 career games with 30 goals and four assists for 34 points. He also has 42 career ground balls. This season he is third on the team with 11 goals and is fourth with 13 points. As a sophomore he was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
