American U. Edged by Lafayette in Home Finale

American University came back to tie the game with four minutes remaining but couldn't complete a comeback as Lafayette walked away with the 13-12 victory on Saturday afternoon.

American (7-6, 3-2) was down by as many as four with 12:25 remaining before back-to-back goals from Lauren Schoenberger and Kimberly Collins cut Lafayette's lead to two, 11-9. After a Lafayette goal the Eagles answered with a 3-0 run as Emily Maher netted the equalizer on a free position shot, 12-12.

But the Leopards found the back of the net with 1:30 remaining and held off American's attempts in the final minute for the 13-12 victory.

Lafayette (9-6, 2-2) took an early 3-2 lead in the first half before Paige Lin was able to tie it on a free position shot. The Leopards answered with a 3-0 run to take the 6-3 advantage at 6:24. Emily Stankiewicz added two goals in the closing minutes of the first half to cut Lafayette's lead to 7-5 at the break.

The Eagles came out of the half with back-to-back goals from Collins but a 4-0 Lafayette run gave American its largest deficit of the game, 11-7.

Collins and Stankiewicz each had a hat trick to lead the Eagles and Schoenberger and Lin each added two goals apiece on Senior Day. American held a 16-11 advantage in draw controls with Stankiewicz tallying a career-high six. Kaska Komosinski recorded eight saves in the loss.

Addie Godfrey and Ana White each had four goals for the Leopards. Lafayette owned a 25-19 advantage in ground balls collected on the day.

American will close out the regular season with a three-game road trip, beginning with its Patriot League season finale at Navy on Friday, April 13 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network, with the Eagles looking to clinch a spot in the 2012 Patriot League Tournament.
