St. Mary's Pulls out a One-Goal Win at York

York, Pa. – It came down to the wire in Saturday afternoon's Capital Athletic Conference contest between St. Mary's and host York, and St. Mary's pulled out an important 10-9 conference victory.

St. Mary's (8-4, 5-1 CAC) owned a two-goal lead with 3:41 remaining in the final period behind junior midfielder Taylor Cook's (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) fourth goal of the afternoon. However, York, who outscored the Seahawks 4-2 in the fourth quarter, pulled within one with just 34 ticks on the clock as first-year attacker Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) found the back of the net with his fourth tally of the day.

Junior midfielder Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) won the ensuing face-off and the Seahawks called a timeout with 22 seconds left. Following the timeout, York's junior defenseman Justin Gordon (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) caused a turnover in St. Mary's attacking third and first-year LSM Hogan Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) picked up the ground ball. The Spartans cleared the ball into their attacking end with eight seconds to go but failed to connect on a pass before time expired.

Cook paced the Seahawk offense with four goals while Mitchell and sophomore midfielder Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School) each contributed two points on a goal and an assist. Mitchell dominated face-off X with a 15 of 19 effort while scooping up a game-high nine loose balls.

St. Mary's tallied a 3-1 advantage in the first stanza as Cook, first-year attacker Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana), and Long all found the back of the net.

The Seahawks headed into halftime with a 6-3 margin as Mitchell and Cook scored the first two goals of the second period before a pair of Hutson's goals sandwiched junior attacker Patrick Mull's (Fallston, Md./Fallston) eighth goal of the season.

Cook's man-up goal to start the third period gave St. Mary's a four-goal cushion before York scored two consecutive goals in under two minutes to close the gap to 7-5 at 9:14. Junior attacker Stew D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) sent the Seahawks into the final period with a three-goal margin with his goal at 0:33.

York (6-5, 2-3 CAC) notched three of the first four goals of the fourth quarter to come within 9-8 at 7:17 as sophomore midfielder Seth Krolus (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored twice.

York outshot the Seahawks, 31-24, and senior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) denied four Spartan shots in 49 minutes of action.

St. Mary's will be back in action next Saturday, April 14th as the Seahawks welcome Wesley College (2-9) to Seahawk Stadium for league action at 1:00 pm.
