Fitchburg State Shut Down at Curry

MILTON, Mass. (April 10, 2012) Fitchburg State traveled to Curry College this evening, falling to the Colonels, 18-5, in non-conference action at the D. Forbes Will Athletic Complex.

Curry junior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass./Hull) led all scorers, totaling a game-high eight points with four goals and four assists, while sophomore Mel Brickley (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) added six points on the evening with a game-best five scores and one dish. Sophomore Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) was also solid, chipping in with four goals and one helper for five points on the night.

The Colonels grabbed a commanding seven goal lead after one half of play, using a four goal effort from Brickley and a trio of scores from Monfredo. Trailing 3-2 after a pair of scores from Fitchburg State freshman Lindsay White (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) and a single tally from senior Kelly Finamore (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), Curry unleashed an 8-0 run to close the half with a 10-3 advantage. Brickley converted three scores in the Colonels run, while Monfredo, Bottary and Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) also added goals.

The Colonels wasted no time in the second half, getting on the board just 0:36 into the period on a Brickley score, and adding three more unanswered markers for a 14-3 advantage. Fitchburg State stopped the Curry streak with a goal from junior Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) at the 16:19 mark, but four other tallies for the Colonels iced the contest. . Fitchburg State added one more goal with a score from Finamore at the 6:12 mark, but the Curry defense limited the Falcons to just ten shots in the second half.

Finamore led the Fitchburg State offensive efforts with three points on the night, including two goals and one helper, while White (2 goals) and Bartlett (1 goal, 1 assist) added two points apiece.

Throughout the contest, Curry held a 37-20 advantage in targets, while also posting a 14-11 advantage on the draw. In net, sophomore Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) totaled nine saves her 60 minute effort for the Falcons, while senior Mara Lynch (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) collected eight stops in 45 minutes of work for Curry.

Fitchburg State (5-6, 3-1 NEWLA) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Westfield State at 11:00 a.m. Curry (6-5, 0-3 TCCC) will host Emerson College on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
