Saint Vincent Upends the Presidents
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Nick Pensyl scored a game-high three goals and added one assist to help Saint Vincent record a 9-4 men's lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
The Bearcats (2-7) snapped a six-game losing streak after outshooting the Presidents (2-10) by a 43-30 margin.
W&J scored the first goal of the game as junior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) scored midway through the first quarter. Pensyl got the Bearcats on the scoreboard three minutes later and then set up Alex Langton 75 seconds for a 2-1 lead.
SVC upped its lead to 5-1 at halftime after netting all three goals of the second quarter. Pensyl fired in an extra-man goal at the 8:06 mark, while Zach Clark and Matt Mackey scored in the final six minutes for the four-goal edge. Saint Vincent tacked on four of the first five goals in the second half to open an eight-goal lead with 7:57 remaining.
Will DeLanoy notched one goal and dished out three assists for the Bearcats, who scored on 2 of 5 extra-man chances. Adam Gunter made 10 saves in the net to record the victory.
Freshman attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy) scored twice in the fourth quarter to lead the Presidents' offense. Sophomore midfielder Casey Smallwood (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) netted the other W&J goal. Washington & Jefferson won the ground ball battle (40-34), but SVC won 10 of 16 faceoffs.
