Offense Clicks as Crusaders Crush Catawba

Twelve different Belmont Abbey Crusaders scored goals as Abbey evened its record to 6-6 with an easy 23-1 win over Catawba this afternoon at Alumni Field. Catawba, a first year program, falls to 2-9 in the defeat.

Over half of the Abbey's total shots (40) found the back of the net as the 23 goals scored are the most in two seasons. Elyse Mohn led all players with four, while Katy Connery and Megan Patton both added three.

Lindsay Connolly, Shannin Darley, Molly Schaefer and Gina Colella added two each. Laura Dowd, Rebecca Diggs, Meghan McSherry, Ariel Walker and Lauren DiChiara all scored once. Connolly and Mohn handed out two assists, while Darley, Dowd, Diggs, Hudgins and McSherry all had one each.

The Crusaders controlled the game from the start, scoring the first 11 goals of the game and never looked back. The lone Catawba goal came at the 1:01 mark of the first half as Kelsey Perusse scored on an unassisted tally. The Crusaders scored 11 first half goals on 25 shots.

In the second half the Abbey scored 11 times on 15 shots to earn the shutout. Tory Morgan stopped ten shots, five in each half, to go along with six ground balls. Connery scooped up a game-high eight ground balls and caused two turnovers. The Crusaders won the ground ball battle 38-20 and won 20 draw controls to just six for Catawba. Dowd led all players with seven draw control wins.

The defense caused nine turnovers as Connery and Dowd each led the way with two.
