No. 13 Purple Knights Triumph Over Franklin Pierce

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Andrew Buccellato (Glen Rock, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) and junior Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) both reached the 100-career-point plateau during Saint Michael's 14-8 victory over Franklin Pierce at Duffy Field on Wednesday.

The Purple Knights, who are ranked 11th according to the latest USILA poll, snapped a three-game skid to improve to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Ravens fall to 4-5 and 2-4.

Donnally and junior Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) each notched four markers, while Buccellato netted two for the Purple Knights. Senior Kevin Hunt (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) added one tally and two assists, while classmate Paul Tortora Jr. (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) finished with two assists.

Senior Peter Hanson (Andover, Mass./Andover) scooped up 10 ground balls, and sophomore Chris Casserly (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) had five ground balls and was 11 of 14 on face-offs. Sophomore Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made seven saves for a Saint Michael's squad that held the edge in ground balls, 36-26, and shots, 46-30.

Sophomore Eddie Noonan (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) recorded a hat trick and an assist for the Ravens, and junior Brendan Cahill (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) had a goal and two helpers. Freshman Don Denman (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) made 14 saves in 54:35 of action.

Donnally put the Purple Knights on the board at 12:58 of the first quarter, but the Ravens tallied two straight and took a 2-1 lead with 3:36 remaining in the quarter. Vanzo countered 2:12 later and sparked the Purple Knights, as they tallied the next six goals to take a 7-2 lead with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter. Vanzo tallied three goals during the run.

The Ravens scored at 6:39 of the third quarter to break the hosts' run, but the Purple Knights responded with three straight goals to take a commanding 10-3 lead with 2:28 left in the quarter. Donnally picked up two of the three goals, including the marker that gave him his 100th career point, which came at 5:11.

Franklin Pierce cut the deficit to five at 13:05 of the final quarter, but Vanzo and Buccellato both scored to extend the Purple Knight lead back to seven, as Buccellato met the 100-point milestone with his marker at 5:08 of the final frame. The Ravens tacked on three more goals in the final 4:20 of the contest, but the Purple Knights never let the lead drop below five, as they found the back of the net twice in that span, including Buccellato's second goal with 59 seconds remaining.

The Purple Knights return to action on Saturday when they host Pace University at 1:00 p.m.
