Boston University Doubled Up by No. 20 Boston College

BOSTON - Boston University suffered an 18-9 setback against No. 20 Boston College on Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

BU (8-5) had its seven-game win streak snapped with the loss. The Terriers limited BC (7-7) to just four goals in the second half, with sophomore Christina Sheridan making four of her nine saves in that stanza.

Freshman Mallory Collins led the Terriers with three goals, while seniors Molly Swain and Annie Stookesberry each tallied twice. Juniors Danielle Etrasco and Kristen Mogavero each accounted for one goal.

The Terriers gathered 20 ground balls to just 10 for the Eagles, with 10 Terriers each accounting for two ground balls apiece. BU also directly caused six turnovers on the afternoon.

BC staked itself a 4-0 lead with 24:31 left in the first half before Collins and Etrasco each scored to cut the deficit in half. The Eagles made it 5-2 before Swain converted a free position shot to make it a 5-3 game. That was as close as BU got, as BC scored twice to make it 7-3.

Stookesberry struck with 12:18 left in the first frame before BC scored the next six goals to make it 13-4. The teams alternated scoring the final three goals of the half, with Swain cutting the BC lead to 14-6 entering halftime.

Both teams played better defense in the second stanza, with the squads combining for just seven goals. The Terriers cut the BC lead to 15-8 with 23:40 to play, but the Eagles scored three goals over a nearly 20-minute span to finish the game. Collins completed her hat trick with 1:44 remaining in regulation to close the scoring.

BU will look to clinch the America East regular-season title on Saturday when the Terriers host Stony Brook at Nickerson Field. Opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
