Mules Gallop by Southern Maine to Win 4th Straight

GORHAM, Maine -- Colby used a run of 14 consecutive goals to take command and went on to defeat Southern Maine, 20-5, in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win was the fourth straight for the surging Mules, who improved to 6-3 overall. The Huskies dropped their sixth straight game to slide to 3-7 on the season.

Thirteen different Colby players registered a goal in the game led by junior John Jennings (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) who found the net four times. Juniors Greg McKillop (Washington, DC/St. Albans), Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown) and Garth Franklin (Fayetteville, N.Y./Bancroft School) and rookie Derek Youngman (Cohasset, Mass./Thayer Academy) all had two goals and an assist.

Rookie Will Tyler (Woodbury, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) started in the cage for the Mules. Tyler recorded five saves over the first three quarters. Senior Tyler Cash (Middleton, Mass./St. John's Prep) came on to play the final quarter and made two saves.

For the Huskies, senior Nate Prince (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) and junior Steve Ribero (Londonderry, N.H.) scored two goals apiece. Juniors Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) and Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) split the time between the pipes and combined for four saves.

Deveau gave the Mules a 1-0 lead 93 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal. Freshman Burleigh Desjardins (Brunswick, Maine) equalized for the Huskies two minutes later, but that would be the last tie. Jennings sparked the run of 14 straight Colby goals with 9:17 remaining in the quarter. The Mules led 4-1 after a quarter, and 12-1 at the halftime intermission.

The Mules' advantage grew to 15-1 on Jennings fourth goal with 12:16 to play in the third quarter. Prince broke the string of Colby goals for USM with 10:47 remaining.

Colby out shot USM 42-28 for the game, had a 35-24 edge in ground balls, and converted 4 of 9 man-up situations.

Southern Maine will be back in action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game at Western Connecticut State University. Colby travels to Williams College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a NESCAC match.
