Hillman Leads Wheaton Over Wentworth
NORTON, Mass. – Freshman Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) scored two goals and dished out three assists, as Wheaton extended its winning streak to five games with a 12-5 win over Wentworth in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.
Junior Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) added a goal and three assists for the Lyons, who improved to 7-3 with the win and 3-0 lifetime against the Leopards (1-8). Classmate Will Compton (Deering, N.H./Proctor Academy) chipped in with two goals and an assist while senior Duncan Smith (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) netted a pair of goals.
Sophomores Jeff Guilherme (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and Max Blum (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) each scored twice for Wentworth, which received 13 saves from junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South).
Wheaton led 3-2 after 15 minutes of play behind goals from Compton, Duncan, and senior David Schroeder (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North). Guilherme potted a pair for the Leopards. The Lyons reeled off four-straight goals in the second to take a 6-2 lead into halftime. Hillman tallied two goals and an assist in the frame.
The Lyons opened the third by scoring three goals in 1:03 to push their lead to seven at 9-2. Hillman started the run with his 20th at 7:27, followed by markers by sophomore Colby Shields (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) at 6:49 and Harrington at 6:24.
Trailing by six entering the fourth, Wentworth received two goals from Blum – his third and fourth markers of the season – to cut Wheaton's lead to 9-5. Seven seconds after Blum's second goal, junior Greg Smith (Nashua, N.H./Chaminade) won the face-off, ran down the field and found freshman Sean Finn (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) for his third of the year. Man-up goals by Doherty at 9:56 and Smith at 3:28 sealed the win.
Sophomore Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I./Trinity Pawling) made 14 saves to improve to 7-3 on the year. Wheaton finished with a 37-30 edge in shots and also won 15 of 21 face-offs. Junior Ian Casey (Medway, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) collected six ground balls.
Junior Sean Paradis (Pelham, N.H./Pelham) and freshman Nicholas Fournier (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) each notched five ground balls for Wentworth.
The Lyons return to action next Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Babson at Mirrione Stadium. Wentworth hosts Wheelock Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
