Dolphins' Rally Falls Just Short Against Mount Saint Mary

Yonkers, N.Y. Mount Saint Vincent dropped its fourth straight contest on Wednesday night, falling to league rival Mount Saint Mary by a score of 14-13. Sophomore Bruce Pappas (Montrose, N.Y.) had a huge night with five goals and six points and senior Dan Cohen (Ardsley, N.Y.) scored three times on senior night for the Mount.

The two teams would trade the first six goals of the night, before Andrew Pullen started a three goal run for the visitors with a goal with 55 seconds left in the opening stanza. Jake Robison and C.J. Cardo would follow with goal to give the Knights a 6-3 lead with 14:01 left in the first half.

Mount Saint Mary would score five times overall in the second stanza to build a lead as large four goals twice before halftime. Pappas would score twice in the frame for the Dolphins, including a marker with eight seconds left before the half to bring the Mount back to within 9-6 after 30 minutes of action.

Matt Desimone (Congers, N.Y.) would open the scoring in the second half for the Dolphins and cut their deficit to 9-7, but Mount Saint Mary would answer right back to goals from Robison and Matt O'Donnell to spread the Knights' lead back to four goals at 11-7 with 8:46 to play in the third period.

Following the O'Donnell tally for the Knights, Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and John Petito (Staten Island, N.Y.) started a 4-1 stretch for the Mount that saw then come to within 12-11 with just over 12 minutes to play in regulation.

The Knights would bend but not break in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 4-2 by the Dolphins. After O'Donnell pushed the Mount Saint Mary lead back to three with 8:13 to play in the game, Cohen and Pappas scored just under five minutes apart to get back to within a goal at 14-13 with just under three minutes to play in the game.

The Dolphins would have possession after Derek Wilson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the ensuing face-off but two turnovers would cost the Mount a shot at tying the game and forcing overtime.

Pappas finished the night with five goals and an assist for the Mount and also picked up two groundballs and forced three turnovers. Cohen scored three times for the Dolphins and added a helper, while Petito and Desimone each scored two goals.

Frank Maddaloni had a big night with 10 groundballs for Mount Saint Vincent, with Ajao rounding out the game with a goal and an assist.

Mount Saint Mary was paced by five goals and seven points from Robison with Pullen and O'Donnell each cashing in three times. Stephen White won 12 face-offs for the Knights and scooped nine groundballs.

Kyle Kalibat finished the night with 10 saves, including four in the fourth quarter and also secured a groundball. Shawn Cobstill earned the win for the Knights with 13 stops to go along with two groundballs.

Mount Saint Vincent would finish the game with a 45-35 edge in shots and a 39-37 advantage in groundballs. The Dolphins also won 18 of the 30 face-offs taken in the game with Wilson leading the way with 17 victories. The Knights however, cashed in three extra man goals in seven chances.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 7-8 overall on the season and to 0-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Saturday when they close out the home schedule against Montclair St. Face-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
