Oswego State Powers Past Alfred for Victory

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Senior Erin Cummings (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) recorded 12 points on seven goals and five assists to lead an Oswego State offensive attack that saw seven players score in a 23-8 win over Alfred on Thursday afternoon. Eight Lakers also recorded assists to help the Lakers improve to 3-5 overall, while the Saxons fell to 4-6.

Both teams traded quick goals in the opening moments of the game, as Danielle Citro (Jr,. Miller Place, N.Y.) scored 21 seconds in followed over a minute later by Alfred's Kaitlyn Button.

Michelle Ruskey (Jr., Deerfield, N.Y.) hit Rachael Raffa (Sr., Kings Park, N.Y.) with a pass as she was cutting towards the cage for her 30th goal of the season and the first of her five goals for the game two and a half minutes into the half. The goal sparked four-goal run with two markers coming from Cummings and another from Courtney Cosentino (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) to put Oswego State on top, 5-1.

Button scored her second goal of the day to end the stretch, but an Alfred player was assessed a red card shortly after to give the Lakers an extra attacker in the offensive zone for two minutes. Oswego State made the Saxons pay, as Cosentino, Becky Guess (Fr., Burnt Hills, N.Y.), and Raffa netted goals put the Lakers ahead 8-2 with 19 minutes remaining in the first half.

Oswego State continued to build on its lead, as it reached a 10-goal advantage with 7:23 to go before halftime and again with nine seconds left in the stanza after Cummings posted her fifth goal following a pass from Candace Tarana (So., Rochester, N.Y.). The Lakers held a 16-6 lead at the break.

Raffa scored twice followed by a Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) free position goal to put Oswego State in cruise control at 19-6 with 24 minutes left on the scoreboard. The Lakers outscored the Saxons, 4-2, the rest of the way.

In addition to 12 goals from Cummings and Raffa, Collins, Cosentino and Citro each finished with three goals with the other goals coming from Guess and Stephanie Cronk (Jr., Endwell, N.Y.). Cummings, Raffa and Tarana registered three assists apiece, while Ruskey contributed a pair of helpers. Guess, Kasey Kuzma (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.), Miranda Czechowski (Fr., West Seneca, N.Y.), and Emily Wolff (Fr., Middle Island, N.Y.) also tallied assists. Cummings also led the way with seven ground balls.

Goalies Ashlee Engel (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) and Nicole Nalle (Sr., Oswego, N.Y.) allowed six and two goals, respectively, while Engel made five saves in the first half and Nalle posted four in the second.

Button, Devin Fitzgerald and Ashley White posted two goals each for the Saxons, while Molly Finnerty added the final tally. Alfred goalie Taylor Tarajos ended the game with 15 saves.

Oswego State celebrates Senior Day on Saturday when it hosts Brockport in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
