No. 1 Northwestern Rallies to Edge No. 3 North Carolina

Evanston, Ill. Top-ranked Northwestern out-scored No. 3 North Carolina 4-1 in the second half, overcoming a two-goal halftime deficit to defeat the Tar Heels 8-7 on Friday night in action at Lakeside Field. The Wildcats remain unbeaten at 13-0 this season. Carolina falls to 13-2 with the loss in its 2012 regular-season finale.

Carolina led 6-4 at halftime before Northwestern started the second half with a 4-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. The Tar Heels pulled within one on a goal in the final minute by Becky Lynch off an assist from Abbey Friend, but a turnover in the final 30 seconds cost Carolina a chance to tie the score.

Lynch led the Tar Heels with three goals, scoring twice in the first half and once late in the game during the attempt to come from behind. Emily Garrity and Kara Cannizzaro each finished with a goal and an assist. Taylor George and Jessica Griffin both also scored.

Northwestern improves to 10-2 all-time against the Tar Heels and have won four in a row in the series and seven of the last eight meetings.

The Tar Heels are the only team in the nation to have beaten Northwestern in Evanston since 2005, having done so two seasons ago. Carolina started strong and led 6-4 byhalftime with Lynch scoring twice before the break.

After the Wildcats led 1-0 and 2-1, UNC scored three consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead with 13:00 left in the first half after a Garrity goal. Fitzgerald then scored for Northwestern before Carolina scored two of the final three goals of the opening period to lead 6-4 at the break.

Northwestern scored the first four goals of the second half, holding the Tar Heels scoreless for the first 29:20 after halftime until Lynch's goal with 40 seconds to play.

Carolina will return to action next weekend in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Durham, N.C., on Saturday April 21 against an opponent to be determined.
