UMBC Explodes in Second Half to Dispatch Catamounts

UMBC scored the first two goals of the second half to take a two-goal lead, 9-7. A pair of goals from Mas allowed the Catamounts to climb back within one, 10-9, with 17:48 left in the game.

The Retrievers answered with five straight goals, from five different scorers to extend their lead to six, 15-9 with 12:31 left. A goal by UVM's Samantha Stern at the 12:10 mark halted the rally, but UMBC rattled off four more goals over four minutes to push its lead to nine, 19-10, with six minutes remaining.

Sydney Mas had the final tally of the game at the 5:42 mark and the Catamounts were limited to two shots in the final five minutes as UMBC worked the clock to the end of regulation.

Stern finished the game with a hat trick, including her 100th career goal, and Mas added three goals for the Catamounts.

Laura Barber was credited with five saves before being relieved by Meg Hopkins in the Vermont net. Hopkins did not register a save in the final eight minutes of the game.

Kendall Mason and Anna Barnett combined for 12 stops for UMBC, with Barnett picking up the victory and nine saves.

UMBC improves to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in America East, while Vermont falls to 8-7 and 1-3 in the league.

UVM returns to action on Saturday (April 21) against Binghamton at noon at Virtue Field. The game will be the first of a lacrosse doubleheader, as the Vermont men's team hosts Binghamton at 3:00 p.m.
