Warriors Fall to Defending Champ Widener

CHESTER, Pa. A 6-1 run between the second and third quarters helped lift two-time defending conference champion Widener to a 14-8 win over Lycoming in Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday, April 14, at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium.

The Warriors (4-7 overall, 1-2 Commonwealth) fought back from a 4-2 deficit early in the second quarter as junior Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) and senior Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) scored to tie the game at four with 11:49 left, but Lycoming struck three times in a two-minute span midway through the quarter to take a 7-4 lead into the half.

The Warriors closed within two goals with 9:33 left in the third quarter when senior Ben Walker (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) found senior Hank Runser (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) for the score. However, the Pride (4-7 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth) scored three more goals in a row, with two in a six-second span just 40 seconds after Runser's goal to take control of the game, never letting the Warriors back within four goals.

Payne and Runser each had two goals for the Warriors and freshman Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West) added two helpers. Walker posted a goal and assist. Senior Tim Clemente (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) added 10 groundballs and won 14 of 25 faceoffs. Freshman Joe Marchetti (Cortland, N.Y./Homer) added two caused turnovers.

Josh Fox led the Pride with four goals and six groundballs and Robert Clemens added four assists. Michael Bassani posted three goals and four groundballs and Ryan Eidenshink also added three goals. Timothy Winslow posted five groundballs and 11 faceoff wins.

In net, sophomore Andrew Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) posted 13 saves before yielding to freshman Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) for the last five minutes for the Warriors. Mac Nestler earned the win for the Pride, making nine saves.

The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, April 21, when they host Commonwealth Conference newcomer Albright at 1:00 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
