Thren Nets Fives to Help Bears Outslug McDaniel

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. Ursinus senior attack Alyssa Thren (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) had five goals, including one with 3:14 left to go that helped to give Ursinus (8-6, 4-3 Centennial) a 15-13 shootout win over McDaniel (6-8, 3-5 Centennial) Saturday afternoon. The win helped Ursinus inch one step closer to the conference playoffs.

Junior attack Lauren Garganio (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), senior attack Emily Diehl (Lebanon, N.J./Voorhees) and sophomore midfielder Nicole Kovacs (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) each had two goals for the Bears, while Garganio added in two assists.

Ursinus never trailed in the contest, but, never led by more than three goals as the Green Terror kept answering Ursinus. Paige Messersmith had five goals for the Green Terror and an assist.

Leading 9-6 at intermission, Ursinus saw McDaniel rallied back to within one at 9-8, before the Green Terror would eventually tie the score at 11-all with 14:15 left on a free position shot by Monica Parcell.

With the score tied at 12-all, Then scored with 7:23 left to give Ursinus a 13-12, followed by a goal from Garganio at 4:01 for a 14-12 lead.

Thren's goal, her 43rd of the season, gave Ursinus the 15-12 lead with 3:14 left.

Individually, Thren had two forced turnovers, five draw controls and two ground balls.

In goal, sophomore Riley Pembroke (Great Falls, Va./Langley) had 11 saves.

Ursinus hosts Haverford on Wednesday.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. Ursinus scored three goals in a 4-minute, 9-second span to break a 12-all deadlock and defeat McDaniel 15-13 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.

Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) led the Green Terror (6-8, 3-5 CC) with five goals and an assist while also corralling 10 draw controls for the second straight game.

Alyssa Thren paced the Bears (8-6, 4-3 CC) with five goals of her own.

Knotted at 12-all after Danielle Entrot's (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) second goal of the game with 7:32 to play in regulation, Thren needed just 11 seconds to put Ursinus back in front.

Lauren Garganio stretched the lead to 14-12 with 4:01 to play before Thren netted her 43rd goal of the season with 3:14 to play to give the Bears a three-goal cushion.

Messersmith converted a free-position shot with three seconds on the clock to set the final margin.

Goals from Thren and Kitty Dawson staked Ursinus to a 2-0 lead in the game's first 6:51 before Monica Parcell (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) cut the deficit int half just 18 seconds later.

Garganio found Amber Moyer 50 seconds after Parcell's marker to put the hosts back on top by two but Anna Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) once again made it a one-goal game a minute later.

Clinging to a 5-4 lead after an exchange of goals, Thren converted a free-position shot with 11:52 to play and Kim Peifer connected off a feed from Emily Diehl to make it a 7-4 game with 10:29 to play.

Back-to-back scores from Mary Tokolish (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) closed the deficit to a single goal once again with 6:55 to play.

Goals from Nicole Kovacs and Garganio pushed the advantage to 9-6 at the intermission.

A pair of Messersmith markers once again trimmed the deficit to one with 24:09 remaining.

After Kovacs and Entrot traded goals, Taylor Egolf scored with 16:43 to play to give Ursinus an 11-9 lead.

A Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond)-to-Messersmith goal 37 seconds later and a Parcell free-position goal knotted the game at 11-all with 14:15 showing.

Diehl and Entrot traded goals 2:20 apart.

McDaniel finished with a 32-25 advantage in shots.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Catholic on Wednesday. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
