Robert Morris Wins NEC Shootout with Mount St. Mary's

Moon Township, Pa. April 14, 2012 Robert Morris punched its ticket for its second straight postseason by taking down defending NEC champion Mount St. Mary's, 17-14, in league action Saturday afternoon at a cool and rainy Joe Walton Stadium.

With the win, RMU clinched a berth in the four-team NEC Tournament for the second-consecutive year while also taking down the Mountaineers for the first time ever.

The Colonials performed well in most facets of the game, including having their offense remaining on a roll. RMU has now scored at least 15 goals in four consecutive games for the first time in program history, and the Colonials have notched a double-digit assist total in each of those affairs. RMU ripped a season-high 48 shots at the opposition cage, a mark which ranks among the top 10 in program history.

Redshirt junior Dave Morton (Orangeville, Ontario/Hill School) tallied a team-high six points on the strength of three goals and three assists. Morton's fifth straight multi-goal game gave him 26 points in his last five outings. His fifth career hat trick also extended his career-long point streak to 11 games.

Junior Jake Hayes (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial) notched RMU's other hat trick of the day and added an assist to post four points. Hayes, who registered a career-best six ground balls, picked up his 10th career hat trick while claiming his ninth multi-goal performance in 12 games this season.

Senior Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Saltfleet), a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, became just the third Colonial ever to surpass 150 points for a career as he tallied two goals and an assist. He reset his career high for points in a season with 48, a mark which currently has him in fifth place in single-season RMU history. Matisz is now riding an 18-game point streak and has tallied 38 multi-point games and 23 multi-goal outings in his career. He has also tallied at least three points in 15 of the team's last 17 games.

Senior Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario/John McCrae) matched Matiz's output to extend his point streak to 16 games. He posted the 32nd multi-point effort of his career while claiming his 12th career multi-goal game.

Mount St. Mary's notched back-to-back goals to even the game, 4-4, late in the first quarter, but RMU soon took over.

The Colonials utilized an 11-3 run over a 29:21 stretch to blow the game wide open as they took an eight goal lead, 15-7. RMU used nine different goal scorers during this game-changing run.

Robert Morris still led by eight, 17-9, in the middle stages of the fourth quarter, but Mount St. Mary's would score the game's final five goals to tighten the score as the clock wound down.

Senior Mike Grosz (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) had a strong all-around day as he went 17 for 28 on faceoffs while claiming seven ground balls. He also posted two first-half assists to tally the first multi-point game of his career.

Senior Casey Abbott (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep.) scored once in each half to notch his fifth straight multi-point game. Abbott now has four multi-goal games this season and six in his career.

RMU had advantages in shots (48-36), shots on goal (27-18), ground balls (32-20), faceoffs (20-13) and clear percentage and also committed a season-low 10 turnovers. It is the fourth straight game in which RMU has had advantages in shots, shots on goal and ground balls.

Junior Tyler Digby (Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster) and redshirt sophomore Taylor Graves (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) both notched a goal and an assist.
