No. 11 Stevens Sprints Past Utica in E8 Action

UTICA, N.Y. (April 14, 2012) No. 11 Stevens scored 10 goals in the third quarter and held Utica scoreless in the same frame to run away with a 23-7 victory in an Empire 8 showdown on April 14. Stevens led 9-5 at halftime and outscored the Pioneers, 14-2, in the second half to post the lopsided victory and improve to 10-2 this season.

Stevens never trailed in the contest but were tied with Utica at 2 with just over nine minutes left in the first quarter of the game. The Ducks then went on a 4-0 run over the final 9:11 of the opening period to the 7:56 mark in the second before Utica got back on the scoreboard.

The Pioneers scored two straight goals, cutting the deficit to 6-4, and then traded goals with the Ducks, making the tally 7-5 with 2:07 left in the first half. From there, Stevens went on a 14-goal run and held Utica from scoring for 21:50 of actual game time. The Pioneers would not tally a goal until the 10:17 point in the fourth quarter, trailing 21-5.

Junior midfielder Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) exploded for 10 points in the game on four goals and six assists. Dupras tallied two goals and three assists in each half and leads the Ducks this season in goals, assists and points.

Three other Ducks scored five points apiece. Senior attack Alex Hofrichter (Terrance Park, Ohio) netted three goals and dished out two assists, junior midfielder Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) recorded the opposite of Hofrichter, two goals and three assists, while junior midfielder Harrison Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) tallied five goals in the victory.

Sophomore attack Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) scored four goals for Stevens, two in each half, while senior attack Kevin Rose (Garden City, N.Y.) tallied a hat trick in the win.

Other Stevens' goals were scored by senior defender Matt Marks (Cortland, N.Y.), junior midfielder Brian Seldeen (Wayne, N.J.), sophomore long stick midfielder Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.), sophomore attack Connor Lynch (Seaford, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.). Seldeen and Culloty also picked up assists, while freshman attack JP Giroux (Ashburn, Va.) also handed out an assist for Stevens.

In all, the Ducks totaled 40 points scored in the victory and won 22 of 33 face-offs.

All three goalkeepers for Stevens saw action in the contest with senior Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) earning the victory in 45:30 of action. Yando made seven saves before giving way to freshman Matthew Deiner (Millstone Township, N.J.). Deiner allowed one goal and made two saves in 10:45 on the field. Junior Ben Shaffer (Armonk, N.Y.) played the final 3:45 in cage for Stevens and surrendered a goal.

The Ducks held a convincing advantage in groundballs, 38-20, but both teams converted 15 clears and neither capitalized on man-up opportunities.

Stevens will be back in action on Wednesday, April 18, for another Empire 8 game against Elmira College at the DeBaun Athletic Complex at 4:00 p.m.
