Golden Lions Defeat Griffins with Late Game Run

Lafayette Hill, PA (4/14/2012) Chestnut Hill continued their recent East Coast Conference (ECC) slide with a 9-4 loss to #5 Dowling. The Golden Lions scored the last five goal of the game to pull away after a tightly played first half.

Sophomore midfielder Bart Pierre (Maplewood, NJ) led the Griffins offense with two goals while the defense was led by sophomore Mike Miskell (Auburn, NY), junior Tom Carfagna (Laurys Station, PA), junior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA).

Junior midfielder Nate Tharp (Laytonsville, MD) found sophomore attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) at 9:54 of the opening quarter to give Chestnut Hill College (6-5, 3-4) the 1-0 advantage. Dowling College (9-1, 8-1) answered on an unassisted strike at 6:08 to tie the contest, 1-1, and then took the lead at 1:46 with another solo effort, 2-1, before junior attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, PA) finished a pass from Carfagna to even play and the end for the first quarter, 2-2.

The Golden Lions fired back with the first two goals of the second quarter, 4-2, but Pierre bookended halftime with two individual strikes to bring the contest equal with 13:27 remaining in the third quarter, 4-4, before the Golden Lions rattled off five unanswered goals for the 9-4 final.

Senior attack Vito DeMola (Holtsville, NY) led the Golden Lions with three goals and two ground balls, he was helped by the strong face-off play of junior midfielder Louis Riley (Smithtown, NY), who won 12 of 16 (.750) in the circle and recovered 11 ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Dougherty (Port Jefferson Sta., NY) earned the win (9-1) with 11 saves and a ground ball.

Melnychenko and Owen each recovered a ground ball in addition to their Griffin goals. Miskell caused three turnovers and hustled to two ground balls while Carfagna forced two turnovers and collected three ground balls. Maurer took the loss (6-5) despite making 12 saves and grabbing four ground balls.

The men's lacrosse team returns home to continue their ECC schedule with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Molloy College on Saturday, April 21.
