Gannon Lacrosse Rolls Past Bloomsburg, 20-7
ERIE, PA - The Gannon women's lacrosse team jumped out to a big halftime lead for the second consecutive day and cruised past visiting Bloomsburg 20-7 Sunday afternoon at Gannon University Field.
Gannon, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II, scored the contest's first six goals and never looked back. Joanna Culkin (Clifton Park, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) tallied three of the six goals and eventually finished the first half with four goals. Bloomsburg cut the deficit to 7-2 with two of the next three goals, but Gannon ended the half with a 5-1 run.
Bloomsburg came out of the gates on fire in the second half. The Huskies tallied three goals in the first three minutes and 12 seconds, cutting the deficit to 12-6.
Gannon calmly responded with eight unanswered goals over the next 18:03 and put the match out of reach. Bloomsburg's final goal with 4:31 remaining produced the final 20-7 score. In all, the Huskies went 22 minutes and 17 seconds without scoring until producing their final goal.
Krista Schunk (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) led all scorers with six goals for the second consecutive day, including four during Gannon's 8-0 run in the second half.
Culkin and Heidi Lott (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) added four and three goals, respectively. Colleen Dixon (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette), Dana Rousseau (Easton, Md./Easton), and Sarah Belen (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) added two goals each.
Abbey Lighton (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) ran the offense with four assists while Dixon dished out three.
Acacia Cook (Clay, N.Y./Clay-NS) improved to 5-4 in goal. The freshman made 10 saves while facing 22 shots in 60 minutes of action.
Gannon improved to 5-4 with its second consecutive victory and fifth straight home win dating back to last season. Bloomsburg dropped to 2-5 with its third consecutive loss. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, April 8 against sixth-ranked Queens (N.C.) at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
