No. 6 Panthers Start Fast, Coast to Win over Union

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. Middlebury led 8-1 and never looked back on its way to a 15-6 win over Union (4-6) on Kohn Field. The sixth-ranked Panthers (10-1) return to action on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., when they host eighth-ranked Colby.

Middlebury's 8-1 early advantage saw Elizabeth Garry and Katie Ritter each score twice with four other players finding the back of the net. Emily McGrail converted a long pass from Kat Egizi to cut the lead to 8-2 with 7:04 remaining in the first half. Garry notched her third of the half with a nice pass from behind the net by Ellen Halle at the 4:07 mark to make it a 9-2 contest. Union's Ciara Dudek and Middlebury's Alice Pfeifer exchanged goal in the final 2:51 to leave the Panthers with a 10-3 advantage at halftime.

Pfeifer scored her second straight goal to open the second half, both with assists to Halle for an 11-3 lead. Following a Union goal, Halle found Colleen Sullivan, with Dani DeMarco following with a pair, for a 14-4 advantage with 11:46 left to play. Heather Fraser and Egizi scored for Union with Pfeifer's third of the game sandwiched in between for the 15-6 final.

Ritter, Garry and Liza Herzog each scored two goals for Middlebury to aid Pfeiffer's effort. Halle finished with four goals, while Margaret Souther added a goal and two assists to go along with three draw controls. Catherine Fowler earned five draw controls along with two assists, while Herzog picked up four ground balls. Lily Nguyen made four saves in 48 minutes of play, while Alyssa Palomba played the final 12 minutes in net.

Egizi had two goals and an assist for Union, while Tory Cameron had a goal and an assist to go along with five draw controls. Kim Grinhaus finished with a dozen saves in goal.
