No. 2 Cortland's Defense Grounds the Golden Flyers

Less than a minute into the second quarter, Slavik recorded his second goal of the game after the Red Dragons won the faceoff. Nazareth continued to stay close with by preventing Cortland's potent attack from scoring for almost 10 minutes. Senior John McDonnell trimmed the Golden Flyers' deficit to 3-2 midway through the period after Parrillo collected another ground ball. Cortland, however, scored twice in the final five minutes of the period to claim a 5-2 lead at the break.

Doyle kept the Golden Flyers in the game through the first half with a total of 10 saves. Doyle had accumulated seven saves in the first quarter to keep Nazareth in the game. The Red Dragons' tenacious defense limited Nazareth to a total of four first-half shots. Cortland, meanwhile, recorded 25 total shots in the first 30 minutes.

Cortland's 4-0 scoring advantage proved to be decisive and allow the Red Dragons to pull away. Cortland scored three of their goals in a span of just 1:13 to stretch its lead to 8-2 with 9:31 to play in the period. Mike Tota, Brian Winterfeldt, and Slavik had the Red Dragons' goals. Cortland's Nick Jarvis won the faceoffs to allow the Red Dragons to score in succession. Before the end of the period, Cody Consul added an unassisted goal to extend Nazareth's deficit to seven goals.

Although the Golden Flyers were unable to solve Cortland's defense in the fourth quarter, Nazareth had more opportunities. The Golden Flyers recorded seven of their total 13 shots in the final period and finished the quarter with a 12-4 advantage in ground balls. Doyle also added four more saves in goal.

For the game, Cortland recorded an overwhelming advantage in total shots, 46-13. Despite Nazareth's efficiency in collecting loose balls in the final period, the Red Dragons also had a 34-27 overall advantage in ground balls collected. Cortland finished with a 9-6 edge in faceoffs. Pinski, Parrillo, and freshman Drew Simoneau each won two faceoffs for the Flyers.

Mike Kaminski recorded three saves in goal for Cortland to earn the victory.

Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 action on Saturday with a critical conference game at 12th-ranked Stevens.
