Strong Second Half Propels No. 16 CUA Past McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. Catholic scored six straight goals that spanned both halves to key a 22-9 non-conference win over McDaniel on Wednesday. Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) led the Green Terror (6-9) with three goals and an assist.

Lindsay Brophy paced the 16th-ranked Cardinals (9-5) with five goals and two assists while Mary Swarthout and Meghan Brady added four goals each. Swarthout added two assists while Brody had one.

Trailing 3-1, Theresa Ciletti finished a Brophy feed with 21:46 on the first-half clock to start the first of three runs of five or more straight goals by Catholic.

Brophy finished back-to-back solo runs just over a minute apart to give the visitors a lead they wouldn't relinquish with 18:55 to play.

Caroline DiBartolomeo stretched the lead to 5-3 with 14:37 showing and Brophy converted a free-position shot with 13:26 to play for a three-goal edge.

Free-position markers from Messersmith and Monica Parcell (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) 4 minutes, 39 seconds apart closed the deficit to 6-5 with 5:55 remaining before Nicole Laitner finished from Swarthout 52 seconds later.

Messersmith answered with a free-position goal with 4:35 on the clock but Swarthout scored back-to-back tallies 26 seconds apart to stretch the lead to 9-6 with 2:17 remaining.

Danielle Entrot (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) made it a two-goal game with 1:29 showing but Brophy, Swarthout and Ciletti all tallied in the final 1:16 of the half to stretch the advantage to 12-7.

A Katie Miller goal 40 seconds into the second half and two Brady unassisted tallies pushed the lead to 15-7 with 26:22 to play.

A Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) solo run momentarily halted the run before goals from Brady and Mary Robinson pushed the lead to nine with 21:22 showing.

Wakins finished a feed from Messersmith 57 seconds later but five different Cardinals scored over the final 17:35 to set the final margin.

Parcell staked McDaniel to an advantage with a free-position goal just 2:48 into the game.

Swarthout responded 23 seconds later but Entrot hit Messersmith and then scored off an Anna Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) feed for the early 3-1 lead.

Messersmith added five draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers while Kate Keim (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) had four ground balls.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Washington (Md.) on Saturday. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

WESTMINSTER, Md. CUA won its second straight game on Wednesday afternoon, downing McDaniel, 22-9. The Green Terror kept things close in the early going, but a 10-2 run in the second half paved the way for the Cardinals win. Lindsay Brophy led CUA with five goals, while Mary Swarthout and Meghan Brady added four each.

McDaniel's Monica Parcell scored the game's first goal less than three minutes in, but Swarthout took a feed from Brophy and tied things at one 23 seconds later.

Paige Messersmith gave the lead back to the Green Terror with a score at the 25:47 mark, and after Danielle Entrot found the back of the net three minutes later, CUA was down by two.

Theresa Ciletti made it 3-2 with her 17th goal of the season at the 21:46 mark and after Brophy scored with 19:58 to play before halftime the game was tied at three.

The scoring continued for CUA with Brophy netting goal number-two at the 18:55 mark and Caroline DiBartolomeo getting into the act four minutes later to make it 5-3 in favor of the Cardinals.
