Castleton Downs Cobleskill in Non-Conference Action

CASTLETON, Vt. Nohea King (St. Albans, Vt.) scored three goals and handed out an assist, and the Spartans outscored SUNY-Cobleskill 8-1 in first and third period combined to earn an 11-5 non-conference win at Spartan Stadium Wednesday evening. With the win, Castleton has now won seven of its last eight to improve to 8-7 overall. Cobleskill falls to 1-10.

Trailing 1-0, Colin Murray (Oshawa, Ont.) got things started for the Spartans with 12:46 remaining in the first period, batting home a rebound out of the air and past Cobleskill goalie Eric Randazzo (Tully, N.Y.) for his 21st of the season. A.J. Groot (Canandaigua, N.Y.) took the initial shot that Randazzo kicked into the air to a waiting Murray who swatted it home.

Groot gave the Spartans the lead for good a minute-and-a-half later off a King helper, before King himself netted three of the next four Spartan markers to make it 6-1 three minutes into the second period.

A pair of Cobleskill man-up goals by Brian Murphy (Cross River, N.Y.) and Mike Janavey (Cross River, N.Y.) cut the lead to 6-3 by the seven-minute mark, and the teams traded goals heading into intermission to make it 7-4.

After trading scores to open the third period, Castleton ended the period on a 3-0 run and the fourth period went scoreless for the final 11-5 margin. Alex Green (Braintree, Vt.) netted all three third period tallies for Castleton, including one on a ridiculous show-and-go move to make it 11-5.

Randazzo made eight saves in the first half, including a rocket off the knee which apparently chased him from the game late in the second period. Soctt Anthony (Bethlehem, N.Y.) finished the job with six saves over the final 30 minutes.

Eric Horsfield (Tolland, Conn.) made eight saves in the win.

Brad Barber (Napean, Ont.) continued to impress in the faceoff circle, winning 13 for 20 at the stripe. Adam Farmer (South Burlington, Vt.) played a huge role on faceoff as well, corralling a tying Groot with a team-high six ground balls.

D.J. Lynott led Cobleskill with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

The Spartans have wrapped up the second seed in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tournament, and will finish their NAC slate next Wednesday at Lyndon State.

The Fighting Tigers return to North Eastern Athletic Conference action Saturday, when they host Cazenovia at 1:00 pm.
