Eastern Connecticut Tops UMass Dartmouth

MANSFIELD, Conn. Eastern Connecticut (7-5, 4-0 Little East) scored the final five goals of the first half and went on to a 16-11 Little East Conference victory over Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday night at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

For Eastern (7-5, 4-0 Little East), senior attack Michael Sullinger (Brookfield) had four goals and sophomore midfielder Tyler Fresen (Newington) three goals and four assists and senior goalie Jamie Tommins (Fairfield) stopped 11 shots in net. Last year, UMass Dartmouth (8-3, 2-1 Little East) became the only team other than Keene State to defeat the Warriors in 11 years of LEC regular-season competition.

Neither team led by more than a goal until the Warriors exploded for five straight goals over the final eight mintues of the first half to move out to a 10-5 halftime lead. The lead never dipped below four over the final 30 minutes. Sullinger scored two of the five straight goals and Fresen had a goal and assist in that run.

Sophomore attack Adam Niden scored twice on his team-leading 16 shots for the Corsairs and freshman defensemen Matt Niden, junior defenseman Ryan Holbrook and sophomore defenseman Steve Tarpey combined for 13 ground balls.

UMass, which snapped a 14-game losing skid at the hands of Eastern last year, has dropped two straight after winning seven in a row. The Corsairs had allowed an average of 11 goals per game this year and never had given up more than 12.

Junior faceoff specialist Josh Dubinsky (Woodstock) won 19 of 30 faceoffs and led the Warriors with 13 ground balls.

Eastern visits the University of Southern Maine Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
