Methodical Tigers Cruise Past Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio Colorado College tuned up for Saturday's showdown with Centre College by cruising to an 18-6 victory at Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday night at Selby Stadium.

Senior midfielder Grace Maloney and freshman attacker Madeline Pitkin struck for three goals apiece as the Tigers improved to 12-2 overall and 6-0 on the road.

Junior attacker Ellie Cole, senior attacker Leslie Jacoby, junior midfielder Kate Krieger and junior attacker Frances Staadt added a pair of markers for CC, which won by more than 10 goals for the sixth time this season.

Despite a two goals by Krieger 2:22 into the contest, the Tigers led just 2-1 with a little more than 13 minutes expired. Pitkin scored twice to cap a 4-0 run with 5:17 remaining in the half as CC began to pull away.

OWU trimmed its deficit on the second of three tallies by junior attacker Annie Swanson with 3:27 to play, but sophomore attacker Madeline Scherer recorded what proved to be the first game-winning goal of her career when she scored with 50 seconds remaining to give Colorado College a 7-2 lead at the break.

Staadt struck for a pair of goals just 33 seconds apart in the opening minute of the second half, but the Bishops scored four of the next six goals to pull within 11-6 with a little more than 18 minutes to play on a tally by sophomore midfielder Cate Bailey.

That, however, proved to be the final shot that would elude junior goaltender Lauren Fink, who finished with seven saves.

Pitkin answered that goal 46 seconds later to ignite a 7-0 run.

Junior midfielder Ginna Oates recorded four draw controls and three ground balls for the Tigers, who held an opponent to fewer than 10 goals for the 10th time in 14 games.

Maloney finished with three goals, giving her a single-season high of 37 with at least three games remaining.

The Tigers posted a decided advantage in both total shots (42-16) and ground balls (31-24). The only statistic that favored OWU was draw controls (14-9).

Senior goaltender Lauren Figy finished with 14 saves for the Bishops, who slipped to 6-6 on the season.

Colorado College can lock up the top seed for the 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a victory at Centre on Saturday.
