West Genesee's Messere Sets All-Time Coaching Record

By George Baldassare

Last night, Mike Messere, long-time head coach at West Genesee (NY) High School, became the all-time winningest lacrosse coach, notching his 748th career victory when his Cats defeated rival Oswego High School, 7-3. The game was touch and go for a while, but West Genesee pulled away late.

In reaching the milestone, Messere passed another long-time New York high school coaching legend and fellow Hall of Famer, Joe Cuozzo of Ward Melville on Long Island. It is only fitting that in many of the pictures of Messere, his long-time assistant coach and alter-ego defensive coordinator Bob Deegan is always close by.

As someone who has had the pleasure of knowing Coach Messere over the past 20 years and whom I consider a friend, I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate him on such a stunning accomplishment in completive sport. He remains the essence of "old school is new school" and has remained true to his core principles for all these years, which explains the lasting success he has produced over 36 years.
