RPI Comes from Behind to Edge Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Rookie Jamie Wakefield tallied the game-tying goal and netted the eventual winner with 1:15 remaining to lead Rensselaer past Vassar in Liberty League action on Friday. The Engineers move to 12-1 on the season and 6-1 in conference play. The Brewers slip to 5-7 and 2-4 in Liberty League action.

Vassar broke onto the scoreboard first, building up a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Engineers battled back with four straight goals, including two from sophomore Meg Colitz, to make it 4-3 with 15:53 remaining to play.

The Brewers answered with three goals of their own to make it a 6-4 contest. Phoebe Tzannes led the charge with her second tally of the game.

In the second half of action, RPI battled back, making it 6-all with 14:23 left in the game. Vassar continued to battle, going up by two goals with 10:43 remaining on the clock. The Engineers then took advantage of a Vassar penalty s Lauren Miller scored on the man-up at 5:58 to close the gap to 8-7.

Wakefield then netted the equalizer, also on the man-up, off a feed from Shannon Maguire. In the end, it would be Wakefield unassisted as she fired a shot past Vassar keeper Katharine Pula to secure the victory.

In addition to Wakefield's game-best three goals, Colitz added two goals, while four others also tallied. In the cage, junior Allie Arnal stopped 10 shots.

For Vassar, Marissa Reilly and Tzannes each added two goals, while Zoe Ripecky chipped in with a goal and an assist. Pula shouldered the loss with 11 saves.

Vassar returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Skidmore at 2:00 pm. RPI is also in action on Saturday, traveling to Bard for a 2:00 pm contest.
