#15 Gannon Clinches PSAC Berth with Win at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. Stevie Lombardoni (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) scored a career-high five goals and five different Lady Knights recorded hat tricks as No. 15 Gannon clinched its third consecutive PSAC tournament berth Friday afternoon with a 22-7 victory at Millersville.

Friday's contest was competitive for the first 11 minutes, before Gannon pulled away. Tied at two, the Lady Knights put together a mini 3-0 run to assume a 5-2 lead. Lombardoni, Sarah Grzybinski (New Market, Md./Linganore) and Kimberly Neagle (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) scored during the run. Grzybinski's tally at the 24:24 mark represented her 100th career goal at Gannon.

Millersville cut the deficit to 6-4 with two of the next three goals. It was all Gannon after that. The Lady Knights seven consecutive goals to grab a comfortable 13-4 advantage. Grzybinski, Rachel DerCola (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and Jess Fugate (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) scored two times each during the blitz.

The home squad momentarily regrouped with back-to-back goals, but Christie Valentine's (Friendship, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) score with eight seconds left on the clock sent Gannon into the break with a 14-6 edge. The Lady Knights ended the half on an 8-2 run during the final 18 minutes and two seconds.

The second half belonged to Gannon. The Lady Knights scored the first eight goals of the final stanza as the lead ballooned to 22-6. Lombardoni recorded three of those eight scores. Millersville found the back of the net only once during the final 30 minutes, scoring with 4:40 remaining. It was the Marauders' first goal in 26 minutes and seven seconds going back to the first half. In all, Gannon out-scored Millersville 16-3 during the final 48 minutes and two seconds.

Friday's 22 goals tied Gannon's season-high total accomplished during a 22-8 victory against Lake Erie on March 16, 2012. The Lady Knights have reached the 20-goal plateau four times this season. The scoring output was Gannon's highest during a road match since a 23-6 victory at Erskine on February 26, 2011.

Lombardoni and Grzybinski led all scorers with five goals. Caitlyn Fisher (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) had the most points with three goals, a team-high four assists and seven points. Neagle added three goals and three assists while Fugate recorded three scores and two helpers.

DerCola netted a pair of goals. Valentine completed the scoring with one score and two assists. Margaret Maslyn (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) recorded seven saves between the pipes.

Gannon, ranked 15th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 15 Poll, improved to 9-5 overall and 7-2 in the PSAC with its second consecutive victory and eighth win during its last 10 matches. Millersville dropped to 5-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play. The Lady Knights conclude a two-match weekend road trip Saturday, April 21 at Shippensburg. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
