Ithaca Ekes out One-Goal Victory at Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY- Hartwick fought a tough defensive battle against #24 Ithaca in a low-scoring contest as the visiting Bombers pulled out a 5-4 win at a rainy Wright Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Hartwick's record falls to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the Empire 8. Ithaca improves to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the Empire 8.

Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North), Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East), Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker), and Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) all scored one goal each for Hartwick. Vaglica also added an assist as did Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) and Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East).

James Manilla and Tom Mongelli led the Bombers with two goals each. Devin Weinshank had one goal. Pat Slawta contributed two assists while Jake Long and Jay Lucas both picked up assists.

Shields scored the game's first goal in the first quarter with 7:40 on the clock to give Hartwick the early 1-0 advantage. Just under two minutes later, Manilla would tie it up for IC with a goal and with 2:30 left in the quarter, Weinshank gave Ithaca its first lead of the game with his only goal of the afternoon.

The score would remain 2-1 for nearly half of the second quarter as both teams exchanged turnovers and shots. With 8:17 left to play in the second, Vaglica would hook up with Schaefer for the only goal of the quarter to knot the game at 2-2.

Much like the second quarter, the third period featured both teams getting shots and exchanging turnovers back and forth. The Bombers would finally strike with 8:26 left on the clock on Mongelli's first goal of the day and Ithaca led 3-2 going into the fourth quarter.

Hughes' goal with 10:16 remaining in the final quarter would tie the game at 3-3. The score would remain that way for nearly seven minutes until Mongelli's goal gave Ithaca the 4-3 lead with 3:35 left to play. Two minutes later, Manilla's goal put the Bombers on top 5-3 with 1:36 remaining in the game. With under a minute remaining in regulation, Ithaca's Adam Wacenske was called for slashing and a push to give the Hawks the extra-man opportunity. Hartwick would take advantage as Vaglica's goal with 34 seconds left to play made it a 5-4 contest.

Hartwick won the ensuing face-off but Morrison's turnover gave Ithaca possession with 17 seconds left. The Bombers would give the ball right back giving the Hawks one shot to tie the game. Following a Bombers timeout, Vaglica would bring the ball in and his off-balance shot with seconds remaining was off the mark as Ithaca held on for the victory.

Nick Triano (North Andover, MA/St. John's Prep) started in goal for Hartwick and stopped eight shots. Brendan Green started for the Bombers in goal and he also stopped eight shots.

The Hawks had a small edge in shots, 27-23, and in groundballs, 26-25. Ithaca won seven face-offs to Hartwick's six. IC was 1 for 2 on the extra-man opportunity while Hartwick went 2 for 7. 'Wick had eight caused turnovers in the game compared to four for Ithaca.

Before the game, Hawks seniors Brad Whalen (Foxboro, MA/Foxborough), Brandon Murtha (West Islip, NY/West Islip), Matt Landry (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), Dane Molina (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), James Curcio (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East), Morrison, and Brian Denny (Fairport, NY/Fairport) were honored on Senior Day.

Hartwick will host #12 ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday in the Hawks' regular season home finale. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
