Late Rally by Bellarmine Stuns Detroit

DETROIT -- Sophomore Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) had his 12th career hat trick and a game-high four points and sophomore Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) added two goals and an assist, but a late Bellarmine rally stunned Detroit as the Titans fell, 9-8, on Saturday at Titan Field.

The loss drops UDM to 6-7 overall, but with VMI and Manhattan losing today, the Titans did clinch a berth into the MAAC Tournament. Detroit is 3-2 in conference play on the season and can finish as high as second and the No. 2 seed with a win next week at VMI.

Prior to the game, the Titans honored their first-four year senior class as Jon Bemben (Hartland, MI/Hartland), Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline), Brad Janer (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central), Tim Lehto (Farmington, MI/North Farmington), Ty Maruyama (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain), Jason McDonald (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Blue Point), Adam Nolan (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer), John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate), Adam Parrottino (Troy, MI/De La Salle Collegiate) and Danny Preston (Hempstead, NY/Hempstead) were recognized at midfield for pregame festivities with their parents and family.

After Bellarmine (4-7) scored the first goal of the game, the Titans took the lead with three-straight markers. Junior Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) got the offense going as the LSM tallied his first goal of the year. Adams then corralled a ground ball off a shot by Maini and beat the keeper for a 2-1 lead after one.

Redshirt freshman Scott Drummond (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm) then gave the red, white and blue a 3-1 lead with an unassisted tally five minutes into the second. The Knights then struck for a marker at the 6:11 mark, but UDM regained a two-goal lead as Maini had back-to-back tallies to take a 5-2 advantage at the half.

Adams scored Detroit's only goal in the third and the Titans led by four, 8-4, early in the fourth as Nowicki notched a goal and Adams posted his hat trick with 11:52 left. Detroit maintained that lead until the last 4:05 when Bellarmine ended the contest with five straight goals, including the tying goal with 37 seconds left and the game winner with just 12 ticks remaining.

Junior A.J. Levell (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) made 14 saves in the setback, while picking up two ground balls. The Titans won 14 of 21 face-offs, led by junior Tyler Corcoran (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon) won career-best 8 of 11 effort, with three ground balls, while junior Brandon Davenport (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North) was 5 of 9 with three GB's and Preston won his only attempt.

Houtby and junior Jamie Hebden (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice) each had a pair of caused turnovers with Houtby recording a game-high five ground balls.

UDM will wrap up the regular season next Saturday when the Titans visit VMI. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
