Washington College Edges McDaniel in Overtime

The Shorewomen opened the scoring when senior attacker Kalli Parrish(Timonium, MD/McDonogh School) found freshman midfielder Emily Hubley(West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) for a goal with 26:31 left in the first half.Chelsea Watkins answered for McDaniel with a goal off an assist from Paige Messersmith at 25:06, but Ziccardi countered for the Shorewomen with a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Marissa Restaino (Media, PA/Penncrest) with 24:27 to go.

Messersmith scored off a feed from Watkins at 22:51, but Parrish netted a goal for Washington with 21:49 on the clock to give the Shorewomen a 3-2 lead. The Green Terror then scored back-to-back goals off the sticks of Monica Parcell and Danielle Entrot with 21:14 and 16:20 remaining, respectively, in the first half to pull ahead, 4-3.

Washington then ran off four goals in a span of just 52 seconds to take a 7-4 lead. Ziccardi scored with 13:06 left in the half, senior midfielder Rachel Bartee (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) scored with 12:48 showing, Shipley scored off a Ziccardi feed with 12:27 on the clock, and Shipley scored again off a Bartee assist with 12:14 remaining. The Shorewomen scored twice more before halftime as Shipley netted a goal with 8:02 left and assisted on a goal by Bartee with 4:01 to play to take a 9-4 lead into the intermission.

The Green Terror opened the second half by ending Washington's run with a free-position goal by Parcell with 27:30 to go. McDaniel cut the lead to 9-6 when Messersmith found Entrot for a goal with 21:05 remaining and closed the margin to 9-7 on another Entrot goal, this one off an assist from Mallory Michel, with 20:17 left.

McDaniel evened the score by stretching its run to five unanswered goals as Messersmith scored off an assist from Anna Beaudrywith 19:54 to go and Watkins scored off a Messersmith feed with 18:42 left. The Green Terror then took the lead with the sixth straight goal as Beaudry scored off a Messersmith pass with 16:24 left, giving McDaniel a 10-9 lead.

The Shorewomen pulled back even at 10-10 on a goal by sophomore midfielder Carly Eisenbrandt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) with 12:42 left. McDaniel regained the lead on a free-position goal by Watkins with 10:18 left and opened up its first two-goal lead of the contest on an Entrot goal off a Beaudry assist with 8:40 remaining which made the score 12-10 in favor of the Green Terror. Washington got back to within a goal when Ziccardi fed Hubley for a goal with 8:15 to go, trimming the McDaniel advantage to 12-11. Eisenbrandt then evened the score with a free-position goal with 7:10 left.

Hubley put the Shorewomen back in front, 13-12, with a goal off a Ziccardi assist with exactly six minutes to play. Shipley made it four straight goals for the Shorewomen with a free-position tally with 4:12 to go, giving Washington a 14-12 lead. The Green Terror scored twice in the final 30 seconds to force overtime as Messersmith scored with 30 seconds to go and assisted on a goal by Beaudry with seven seconds left in regulation.

Ziccardi put Washington up for good, scoring with 3:42 left in overtime and Bartee added a goal with 3:09 left to give the Shorewomen a 16-14 advantage. With three minutes left in overtime, a lightning delay halted play for 35 minutes. McDaniel turned the ball over with under 90 seconds to play in the extra session. The Shorewomen were able t clear the ball and run out the clock to hold on for the win.

Shipley and Ziccardi were just two of the four Washington players who scored at least three goals in the win. Bartee added three goals and an assist, while Hubley scored on all three of her shots to raise her season shooting percentage to 69.2%. Eisenbrandt finished with a paid of goals, while Parrish had a goal and an assist.
