McDaniel Holds on to Topple No. 13 Gettysburg

Junior Bobby DeWees (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends), freshman Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), and junior Ryan Fumai (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) all scored two goals for the Bullets while freshman Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) notched one goal and one assist. Junior Nick Avedisian (Laytonsville, Md./Bullis School) won 18 of 25 face-offs.

In goal for the Bullets, junior J.T. McCook (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) started and allowed the first seven goals while stopping three shots. Sophomore Jon Maddalone (Newtown, Pa./Choate Rosemary Hall [Conn.]) played the final 37:20 and let in five goals while making five saves.

William Clary scored three goals for McDaniel (7-6, 3-3 CC) while JS Duke had two goals and three assists. DJ Rickels and Nicholas DiBernardo each scored two goals.

McDaniel outscored the Bullets 8-2 in the first half, when it outshot Gettysburg 17-11. The Bullets turned up the heat in the third quarter, firing off 17 shots while scoring the next four goals to make it 8-6. Sophomore Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) kicked off the surge when he scored his team-leading 30th goal of the season before Firouzan, Maddux, and Fumai followed suit.

Motley prevented further damage by making nine of his saves in the quarter while the Green Terror answered with a 4-0 run spanning the final two quarters. The Bullets trailed 12-6 with less than seven minutes left before mounting a furious rally, starting with a tally by Fumai at the 6:37 mark followed by the first collegiate goal from junior long-stick midfielder Ian Casella (Washington, Mass./Avon Old Farms [Conn.]) on the ensuing face-off.

DeWees then scored back-to-back goals to make it 12-10 with 1:30 left. Gettysburg took a pair of shots that could have cut it to one, but Fumai's offering sailed wide and Motley saved a shot by Firouzan with less than a minute left.

Gettysburg visits Dickinson next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
