Cabrini Edges Gwynedd-Mercy in High-Scoring Slugfest

RADNOR, Pa. Cabrini clinched a first round bye and at least the second seed in the upcoming CSAC tournament with today's 21-18 win over Gwynedd-Mercy. The Cavaliers now hold a 7-1 record in the league and 7-8 overall.

Freshman Lacie Doubet led the Blue and White with a career high eight points on seven goals and an assist. teh rookie's seven goals is the most for a Cabrini player since April 26, 2011 when Gabrielle Gorbey netted seven goals against Centenary College.

The trio of Sarah Means, Melissa Scanzano and Jacky McDermott added three goals each for the Cavaliers.

The Griffins took an early lead, scoring just 20 seconds into play. The Cavaliers responded as Doubet and Means posted goals 13 seconds apart for an early lead. Four goals over the next five minutes returned the score board and momentum to Gwynedd-Mercy.

The Blue and White fought back to tie the score at 5-5 with 19:35 to play in the half with goals from McDermott, Means and Scanzano. The Griffins grabbed a 6-5 lead before McDermott found Doubet to level the score at six.

Two back-to-back Gwynedd-Mercy goals gave the Griffins a 8-6 lead with 8:28 on the clock. Sophomore Suzanne Gennaro's goal with 88 second before the break cut Gwynedd-Mercy's lead to 8-7. McDermott evened the score at the 1:11 mark on a pass from sophomore Kellie Manoppello.

The teams headed into halftime with the score level at 8-8 with 30 minutes to play.

The Blue and White wasted no time in seizing control of the game after the break. Doubet found McDermott just 22 seconds into the half, sending Cabrini on a run of six unanswered goals. Tallies byScanzano, Carzo, Means, Manoppello and Doubet gave the Cavaliers a 14-8 lead with 22:33 left on the clock.

The Griffins chipped away at their deficit with a pair of goals just five seconds apart at the 21:21 mark. Doubet's fourth goal came at the 20:49 mark, giving Cabrini a 15-10 lead. Gwynedd-Mercy cut the score back to 15-11 before Scanzano returned the lead back to five with her third of the day.

Doubet put the game away with three goals in a 44 second span, extending Cabrini's lead to 19-12. The Griffins responded with a pair of goals but tallies by freshman Sara Carzo and sophomore Brianna Thompson returned the lead to 21-13.

The Grifffins tried to mount a late comeback, scoring the game's final five goals.

McDermott and Manoppello recorded a pair of assists each. Doubet and Scanzano secured six ground balls each, while Scanzano and Manoppello caused a pair of turnovers apiece.

The Cavaliers outshot Gwynedd-Mercy 55-29, including 37-24 in shots on goal.

Senior Brigid Dowling led the Griffins (7-7, 5-3 CSAC) with six goals and an assist.

The Cavaliers will close their regular season on Tuesday as they welcome Widener University to Edith Robb Dixon Field for Senior Day 2012. The action is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
