UNE Completes CCC Slate with Win at Salve Regina

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Sophomore Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) tallied seven goals and nine points to lead the University of New England to a 20-13 CCC triumph over Salve Regina in action Saturday afternoon (Apr. 21) at Gaudet Field.

The Nor'easters (12-3) wrap up their conference schedule at 6-1, good for the second seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming CCC Championship, which begins next Saturday (Apr. 28). The 12 victories match the school single-season record set back in 2010.

Tavella's goal total pushed her over the century mark for her career (101), becoming the second player in program history to achieve the milestone.

UNE first-year Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) finished with six points on the day (3 goals, 3 assists), and junior Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) had five points (3 goals, 2 assists) to go with six draw controls. Junior Emily Lodge (Lyman, Maine) and senior Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) added three goals and two goals, respectively.

For the Seahawks (10-5, 3-4 CCC), Kelly Burke registered five markers and Sarah Livingston chipped in with three. Danielle Malconian controlled a game-best seven draws.

Sophomore Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made 10 saves for the Nor'easters, while her counterpart, Josie O'Reilly, posted 11 stops for SRU.

After trailing in the early-going (2-0, 3-2, 4-3), Big Blue ran off five unanswered goals to assume a lead that it would not relinquish (8-4). The Seahawks put in a pair before halftime to make it 8-6 UNE at intermission.

The teams traded scores to begin the 2nd half until it was 10-9 in favor of the visitors, when UNE scored the next four to gain a five-goal cushion (14-9) with 11:18 left. Tavella found the back of the cage three times down the stretch to help the Nor'easters put the game out of reach.

Big Blue concludes the regular-season with a non-league match at 12th-ranked Bowdoin College on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).
