Stevens Rallies Past Nazareth for E8 Victory

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Stevens rallied from an early 3-0 deficit Sunday to defeat Nazareth in an Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse match, 18-8, at the Golden Flyers' artificial turf field.

Ducks' senior Michelle Buonacuore scored six goals and added one assist and sophomore Kara Rafferty added five goals and one assist as Stevens, ranked 17th nationally in Division III, improved to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in Empire 8 games. Nazareth, with one regular-season game remaining at home next Saturday vs. St. John Fisher, dropped to 6-7 oveall and 4-2 in conference play.

On Sunday, Nazareth sped to a 3-0 lead the first eight minutes on goals by juniors Leah Cronister, Alyssa Johnston and Erinn Wood. The Ducks, however, stormed back to control play for the balance of the first half. The Ducks scored eight straight goals, including four by Buonacuore to go up 8-3 before halftime.

Nazareth made it somewhat interesting as sophomore Amy McIntosh and Johnston scored goals just 17 seconds apart to pull Nazareth to within 8-5 to start the second half. Stevens, however, went on a five-goal scoring run to expand its lead to 13-5 and erase any Nazareth comeback hope. Rafferty scored twice for the Ducks during that stretch.

Junior Megan Cregan closed out the scoring for Nazareth by getting the Golden Flyers' last three goals. Johnston also contributed three assists in addition to her two goals for Nazareth.

For Stevens, Gabrielle Gordon contributed three goals and junior Joey Galligan added two goals and one assist.

Stevens had a 36-19 advantage in shots and a 17-13 edge in ground balls. The Ducks also won 20 of 28 draw controls. Sophomore Tara Prosak had eight saves for Nazareth. Meg Collins had seven for Stevens.
