Keene State Gets by Castleton State

KEENE, N.H. - The Spartans dropped one of their final non-conference contests of the season, falling to a tough Keene St. squad by a 13-12 margin on Tuesday evening at the Owl Athletic Complex.

Castleton trailed 13-10 with eight minutes left in the game, but got goals Kate Auer (So. Glens Fall, N.Y.) and Mariah Lesure (Vernon, Vt.) to the cut the deficit one with 5:32 left. However, the comeback would fall short as the Owls defense held stout. The Spartans fall to 8-6 overall while Keene St. improves to 12-3 on the season.

Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) gave Castleton its first lead of the game just 2:51 into the contest off a pass from Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.). The Owls countered by scoring twice in a one-minute span to grab the lead. Auer tied it up at the 21:28 mark, but Keene St. scored five of the next six goals to stretch its lead to 7-3 with just under ten minutes in the half.

The Spartans fought back with three unanswered goals before the end of the half to close the gap to 7-6.

Clark opened up the scoring 3:03 into the second to tie the game, 7-7. The two teams traded goals over the next 12 minutes, with an Owl score at the 14:35 mark giving the hosts a slim 10-9 lead. They added two more for the 12-9 advantage, before Clark ended the run with 8:39 left in the contest.

Keene St. tacked on another for the three-goal lead, before late rush by the Spartans.

Taplin finished the contest with two goals and an assist while Auer added a pair of scores. Samantha Bonasera (Chelsea, Vt.) chipped in with one goal and two assists. Freshman Kelsey McDonald (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was solid in net with eight saves between the pipes.

As the top seed in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division Tournament, Castleton will host the four-team event, beginning with their game against the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.
